Meekness Isn’t Weakness: The Surprising Strength Jesus Wants Every Christian to Have
Have You Ever Felt Like Being Kind Makes You Look Weak?
Have you ever held your tongue when someone insulted you?
Have you ever chosen peace instead of winning an argument?
Have you ever shown grace to someone who didn’t deserve it?
If so, you may have wondered whether people saw your kindness as weakness.
Meanwhile, our culture tells us to fight harder, speak louder, and put ourselves first. Everywhere we look, people celebrate power, dominance, independence, and self-promotion. As a result, many believers struggle to understand what true strength really looks like.
After years of studying Scripture and helping Christians grow deeper in their faith, one truth becomes clear: the lord Jesus Christ defines strength very differently than the world does.
Today, we’re going to uncover the powerful meaning behind one of the most misunderstood teachings in Scripture. We’ll explore what meekness really means, why it isn’t weakness, how Jesus modeled it perfectly, and how you can develop this Kingdom quality in your daily life.
The Beatitude That Turns the World Upside Down
In the Sermon on the Mount, the lord Jesus Christ made a remarkable promise:
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5 NIV)
At first glance, this statement seems backwards.
After all, the world teaches that the strong take what they want. The aggressive get ahead. The powerful win.
Yet the lord Jesus Christ says something entirely different.
He says the meek are blessed.
He says the meek will inherit the earth.
Therefore, we must ask an important question:
What exactly is meekness?
What Does Meekness Really Mean?
The English word “meek” comes from the Greek word “praeis.”
This word carries the idea of gentleness, humility, and controlled strength. It describes someone who possesses power but chooses to submit that power to a higher authority.
In other words, meekness is not weakness.
Instead, meekness is strength under control.
Think of a powerful horse that has been trained by its rider. The horse still possesses incredible strength. Nothing about its power has disappeared. However, that power is now directed and controlled.
Likewise, biblical meekness is not the absence of strength.
Rather, it is strength surrendered to the lord Jesus Christ.
The Problem Many Christians Face
Unfortunately, many believers misunderstand meekness.
Some think meekness means avoiding conflict at all costs.
Others believe meekness means becoming passive.
Still others assume meekness requires allowing people to mistreat them.
Consequently, they either reject meekness or practice an unhealthy version of it.
However, Scripture paints a very different picture.
Biblical meekness does not mean becoming a doormat.
Biblical meekness means trusting the lord Jesus Christ enough to let Him direct your strength.
Jesus: The Perfect Example of Meekness
If anyone could have demanded His rights, it was the lord Jesus Christ.
He possessed all authority.
He commanded nature.
He healed diseases.
He raised the dead.
He could have called countless angels to rescue Him.
Yet He chose another path.
As He faced betrayal, false accusations, beatings, and crucifixion, He demonstrated perfect meekness.
His restraint was not weakness.
His silence was not fear.
His submission was not powerlessness.
Instead, He willingly surrendered His strength to accomplish the Father’s will.
The cross stands as the greatest example of strength under control.
At any moment, the lord Jesus Christ could have stopped His suffering. Yet He endured it because His mission was greater than His comfort.
That is meekness.
A Story We Can All Relate To
Imagine a man named David.
At work, a coworker falsely accused him of making a costly mistake. David knew the accusation was wrong. He felt anger rising inside him. He wanted to retaliate immediately.
However, instead of reacting emotionally, he paused.
He prayed.
He sought wisdom.
Then he responded calmly and respectfully.
Eventually, the truth came out, and his reputation was restored.
Now consider what happened.
Was David weak?
Not at all.
In fact, it took far more strength to control his emotions than it would have taken to explode in anger.
That is exactly how meekness works.
Meekness does not remove strength.
Meekness redirects strength.
How the Lord Jesus Christ Develops Meekness in Us
The good news is that meekness is not something we produce through sheer willpower.
Instead, the lord Jesus Christ develops it within us.
Just as fruit grows naturally on a healthy tree, meekness grows as we walk with Him.
Therefore, if you want to grow in meekness, begin with these practical steps:
1. Surrender Your Rights Daily
First, ask yourself whether you are demanding your own way.
Then invite the lord Jesus Christ to help you trust His plan above your preferences.
2. Pause Before Reacting
Next, resist the urge to respond immediately when emotions run high.
A short pause can prevent a lifetime of regret.
3. Practice Humility
Furthermore, remember that humility is not thinking less of yourself.
Rather, it is thinking of yourself less often.
4. Trust the Lord’s Justice
Finally, remember that the lord Jesus Christ sees every injustice.
Because of that, you don’t have to fight every battle yourself.
Why Meek People Are Truly Strong
Ironically, the strongest people are often the most gentle.
They don’t need to prove themselves.
They don’t need to dominate conversations.
They don’t need to win every argument.
Instead, they find their security in the lord Jesus Christ.
As a result, they can remain calm under pressure.
They can forgive offenses.
They can show grace when others show hostility.
That kind of strength changes families, churches, workplaces, and communities.
