Have You Ever Wondered If Anything Good Could Come From Grief?

Your heart feels heavy.

You wake up thinking about the person you lost. You replay old memories. You wonder if the pain will ever ease. Meanwhile, life keeps moving, but your heart feels stuck.

Perhaps you’ve lost a loved one. Maybe you’ve experienced a broken relationship, a shattered dream, or a season of disappointment that left deep wounds. Whatever the source of your grief, one question often remains:

Can anything good come from mourning?

After years of studying Scripture and encouraging believers through difficult seasons, I’ve seen one truth again and again: the lord Jesus Christ often does some of His deepest work in the valleys we would never choose.

Today, we’ll explore the surprising comfort found in grief, what Jesus meant when He said, “Blessed are those who mourn,” and how you can experience His comfort even in your darkest moments.

The Promise That Seems Backward

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made a statement that sounds strange at first:

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4 (ESV)

Most people connect blessing with happiness, success, or abundance.

However, Jesus connected blessing with mourning.

Why?

Because mourning creates space for us to experience the comfort of the lord Jesus Christ in ways we may never experience otherwise.

Think about it.

No one appreciates water more than someone who has crossed a desert.

Likewise, no one treasures comfort more than someone who has walked through deep sorrow.

Therefore, grief is not evidence that the lord Jesus Christ has abandoned you. Instead, it may become the very place where you discover His presence most clearly.

A Story of Unexpected Comfort

Several years ago, a woman in a church community lost her husband after decades of marriage.

At first, the grief felt overwhelming.

Every room in her home reminded her of what she had lost. Every holiday seemed empty. Every memory brought tears.

Yet something remarkable happened.

Friends began visiting regularly. Scripture passages seemed to speak directly to her situation. Prayer became more personal than ever before.

Although her pain did not disappear overnight, she often said later, “I have never felt the presence of the lord Jesus Christ as strongly as I did during that season.”

Her circumstances were still difficult.

Nevertheless, she discovered that the lord Jesus Christ truly comforts those who mourn.

Why Grief Is a Necessary Part of Life

Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world.

Because of sin, we experience death, suffering, disappointment, sickness, and broken relationships.

As a result, grief becomes part of every human story.

Yet many people try to avoid grief.

Some stay busy.

Others bury their emotions.

Still others pretend everything is fine.

However, healing rarely comes through avoidance.

Instead, healing begins when we honestly acknowledge our pain and bring it before the lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 34:18 reminds us:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Notice that Scripture does not say the lord Jesus Christ is near only when we are strong.

Rather, He draws near when our hearts are broken.

How the Lord Jesus Christ Comforts Us

One of the most encouraging truths in Scripture is that the lord Jesus Christ never wastes our pain.

Instead, He comforts us in several meaningful ways.

1. He Comforts Us Through His Spirit

The Holy Spirit is often called the Comforter, Counselor, Helper, and Advocate.

When words fail and emotions overwhelm us, the Holy Spirit ministers directly to our hearts.

Sometimes His comfort comes as peace.

Sometimes it comes as strength.

Other times it comes as assurance that we are not alone.

Even when we cannot see what He is doing, He continues working faithfully.

2. He Comforts Us Through His Word

Scripture has a unique ability to speak directly into our pain.

A verse you’ve read many times may suddenly feel alive during a season of grief.

Why?

Because the lord Jesus Christ uses His Word to remind us of His promises.

His Word reminds us that sorrow is temporary.

His Word reminds us that He remains faithful.

Most importantly, His Word reminds us that eternal hope exists through Jesus Christ.

3. He Comforts Us Through His People

Many times, comfort arrives through ordinary people.

A phone call.

A handwritten note.

A meal delivered at the perfect time.

A friend who simply listens.

These moments may seem small.

Yet they often become powerful reminders of the love and care of the lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, don’t isolate yourself during grief.

Allow fellow believers to walk beside you.

The Hidden Blessing Inside Grief

Although grief hurts deeply, it often produces spiritual growth.

For example, grief can teach us compassion.

It can deepen our faith.

It can strengthen our dependence on the lord Jesus Christ.

It can shift our focus from temporary things to eternal realities.

While no one would choose suffering, many believers can look back and recognize how the lord Jesus Christ used difficult seasons to draw them closer to Himself.

Consequently, the blessing is not found in the pain itself.

The blessing is found in the presence of the lord Jesus Christ within the pain.

Do You See His Pursuit?

Sometimes comfort arrives so quietly that we miss it.

Therefore, ask yourself:

  • Has someone encouraged me recently?
  • Has a Bible verse spoken directly to my situation?
  • Has the lord Jesus Christ provided strength I didn’t think I had?
  • Have I experienced peace despite difficult circumstances?

If so, those may be signs that He is already pursuing you with His comfort.
