Imagine reaching the end of another busy day. You answered emails. You went to work. You helped your family. You paid bills. You attended church. Yet, one question still lingers.
Did everything I did truly honor the Lord Jesus Christ?
Many believers struggle with this question. They love the lord Jesus Christ, but they often separate their “church life” from their “daily life.” As a result, faith becomes something they practice on Sunday instead of something they live every day.
Fortunately, Colossians 3:17 provides the answer.
Today, we will discover what it truly means to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. We will also learn how this simple command can transform our relationships, our work, our speech, and our purpose.
Our Foundation Scripture
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
— Colossians 3:17 (KJV)
This verse may seem simple. However, it contains one of the greatest principles for Christian living.
Every Word Matters
First, notice that Paul begins with our words.
Our speech reveals our hearts.
Every conversation either builds someone up or tears someone down.
Therefore, before speaking, ask yourself:
“Would I say these words if the Lord Jesus Christ were standing beside me?”
Of course, the answer should always be yes because He is always present.
For example, imagine a frustrated employee speaking harshly to a coworker. Later, regret fills his heart. Instead, if he had remembered Colossians 3:17, he may have chosen patience over anger.
Likewise, our conversations at home should reflect the character of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Every Action Should Point to the Lord Jesus
Next, Paul speaks about our deeds.
This includes everything.
It includes our work.
It includes our hobbies.
It includes our finances.
It includes how we drive.
It includes how we serve others.
In short, nothing falls outside the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Many people believe serving the lord Jesus Christ only happens inside a church building.
However, Scripture teaches something much greater.
A mechanic can glorify the Lord Jesus by doing honest work.
A teacher can glorify the Lord Jesus by treating every student fairly.
A mother honors the Lord Jesus through patient love.
A father reflects the Lord Jesus by leading his family with kindness and truth.
Even the smallest act becomes worship when it is done for Him.
What Does “In the Name of the Lord Jesus” Mean?
This phrase means far more than saying the name “Jesus” before doing something.
Instead, it means acting under His authority.
It means representing His character.
It means seeking His approval.
Consider a police officer.
The badge represents legal authority.
Likewise, believers represent the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ wherever they go.
People should see honesty.
They should see compassion.
They should see humility.
Most importantly, they should see the love of the Lord Jesus Christ reflected in us.
A Story That Changes Everything
A young businessman wanted success more than anything.
He worked long hours.
He earned promotions.
He bought a larger house.
Yet he remained empty inside.
One evening, he read Colossians 3:17.
One sentence stopped him in his tracks.
“Whatsoever ye do…”
Suddenly he realized something.
He had asked how his career could benefit him.
He had never asked how his career could honor the Lord Jesus Christ.
The next morning, nothing about his job changed.
Yet everything about his attitude changed.
He became more patient.
He became more honest.
He encouraged struggling coworkers.
He treated customers with genuine respect.
Months later, people noticed.
Several coworkers even asked why he seemed different.
His daily life became his greatest testimony.
That is the power of living in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Gratitude Changes Everything
Paul finishes with thanksgiving.
Grateful people see life differently.
Instead of complaining, they worship.
Instead of worrying, they trust.
Instead of focusing on problems, they remember the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gratitude transforms ordinary moments into opportunities for praise.
Even difficult seasons become opportunities to grow.
Why This Verse Matters Today
Today’s culture celebrates self.
Social media often tells us to build our own name.
The Bible teaches something completely different.
Our purpose is not to make our name famous.
Our purpose is to honor the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
When we remember this truth, our priorities begin to change.
Our decisions become wiser.
Our relationships become healthier.
Our witness becomes stronger.
Our peace becomes deeper.
Three Questions Before Every Decision
Whenever you face a decision, pause and ask yourself:
- Does this honor the Lord Jesus Christ?
- Would I gladly do this if He returned today?
- Will this help others see His love through me?
If the answer is yes, move forward with confidence.
If not, prayerfully reconsider.
These simple questions can prevent many regrets.
Living the Scripture Every Day
Living Colossians 3:17 does not require perfection.
Instead, it requires surrender.
Each morning, dedicate your words.
Dedicate your work.
Dedicate your relationships.
Dedicate your decisions.
Then allow the Lord Jesus Christ to guide each step.
Little by little, your life becomes a testimony that points others to Him.
