The Most Important Thing: Love the Lord Jesus Christ With All Your Heart

Have You Forgotten What Matters Most?

Have you ever worked so hard to build a good life that you became too busy to enjoy it?

Perhaps you have chased success. Maybe you have worked to provide for your family. You may have focused on your health, career, finances, or future. Yet, somewhere along the way, you may have felt an emptiness that success could not fill.

That emptiness points to a deeper problem: we can become busy with life while forgetting the One who gives life its true purpose.

As a Christian writer and Oneness believer, I spend much of my time helping people understand who Jesus Christ is and how His Word applies to everyday life. Today, we are going back to one of the most important truths in Scripture.

We will look at Deuteronomy 6:5, discover why loving the lord Jesus Christ must come first, and explore simple ways to make that love visible in everyday life.

Most importantly, we will ask ourselves one honest question:

Is loving the lord Jesus Christ truly the most important thing in my life?

The Most Important Commandment

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He pointed people back to the words found in Deuteronomy.

The Scripture says:

“And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”
— Deuteronomy 6:5, KJV

This command reaches every part of our lives.

It speaks about our heart. It speaks about our soul. It speaks about our strength.

In other words, the lord Jesus Christ does not ask for a small part of us.

He calls us to love Him completely.

Therefore, Christian living cannot simply mean attending church, reading the Bible, or knowing Christian words. Those things matter, but they should flow from a heart that truly loves the lord Jesus Christ.

When love comes first, obedience becomes more than a duty. It becomes a response to the One we love.

What Happens When We Put Everything Else First?

Life can easily become crowded.

First, we wake up and check our phones. Then, we go to work. After that, we handle family responsibilities. We pay bills. We answer messages. We run errands. We worry about tomorrow.

Before we know it, the day has ended.

Then, we say, “I will spend more time with the lord Jesus Christ tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, tomorrow can become another busy day.

Eventually, we can become successful while becoming spiritually empty.

We can have money but lack peace.

We can have a career but lack purpose.

We can have a beautiful home but lack joy.

We can have thousands of followers but still feel alone.

We can even become active in Christian service while neglecting our relationship with the lord Jesus Christ.

That is why the most important thing must remain the most important thing.

Success Is Not the Same as Spiritual Success

Imagine two people.

The first person spends years building a successful career. This person earns a good income, buys a beautiful home, and reaches many personal goals.

However, the person rarely prays. The Bible stays closed. Worship becomes occasional. The lord Jesus Christ receives whatever time remains after everything else is finished.

Now imagine another person who works hard and pursues excellence but keeps the lord Jesus Christ at the center of life.

The second person may not have as much money.

The second person may not have the biggest house.

The second person may not receive public recognition.

Yet, this person understands something important.

True success is not simply what we accomplish. True success also includes who we become and whom we love.

Therefore, we should never measure our lives only by achievements.

Instead, we should ask:

“Am I becoming more faithful to the lord Jesus Christ?”

Deuteronomy 6:5 Calls for Our Whole Heart

Notice the language in this command.

It does not say to love the lord Jesus Christ with a small portion of your heart.

It says to love Him “with all thine heart.”

That means our love for Him should influence our thoughts, choices, relationships, priorities, and actions.

Love Him With Your Heart

Our heart represents the center of our desires and devotion.

Therefore, loving the lord Jesus Christ with our heart means we want Him.

We desire His presence.

We desire His Word.

We desire His ways.

We desire to please Him.

Love Him With Your Soul

Our relationship with the lord Jesus Christ reaches deeper than outward behavior.

Our soul belongs to Him.

Therefore, loving Him with our soul means we give Him our deepest devotion.

When life becomes difficult, we continue trusting Him.

When prayers seem unanswered, we continue seeking Him.

When circumstances change, we continue following Him.

Love Him With Your Strength

Finally, Scripture calls us to love Him with our strength.

That means we use what we have for His purpose.

We use our time.

We use our talents.

We use our resources.

We use our influence.

We use our energy.

In short, loving the lord Jesus Christ should affect what we do with everything He has placed in our hands.

We Were Created to Know Him and Make Him Known

Our lives have a purpose.

We were not created simply to work, eat, sleep, earn money, retire, and die.

Instead, we were created to know the lord Jesus Christ, worship Him, and make Him known.

That truth changes the way we see ordinary life.

For example, a parent can teach a child about Jesus.

A worker can demonstrate honesty.

A neighbor can receive kindness.

A friend can hear an encouraging word.

A Christian can pray for someone who is hurting.

A business owner can treat customers fairly.

A believer can use social media to share truth instead of spreading anger.

Therefore, loving the lord Jesus Christ does not remove us from everyday life. It changes how we live everyday life.

The Israelites Were Told to Remember

Deuteronomy 6 did not simply tell Israel to hear the command.

It also instructed them to keep these words in their hearts and teach them diligently to their children.

The command was supposed to become part of daily life.

They were to talk about it when they sat in their houses.

They were to talk about it when they walked along the way.

They were to talk about it when they went to bed.

They were to talk about it when they got up.

The message is powerful.

Do not allow the most important truth in your life to become something you remember only once a week.

Instead, bring your faith into your everyday routine.

Create Reminders That Point You Back to Jesus

Most of us understand the power of reminders.

Our phones remind us about appointments.

Calendars remind us about meetings.

Alarms remind us when it is time to wake up.

Sticky notes remind us what we need to accomplish.

So why not create reminders that point our hearts toward the lord Jesus Christ?

You could place a Scripture verse beside your bed.

You could set a daily reminder to pray.

You could keep a Bible where you will see it.

You could place a Christian message on your desk.

You could write down something the lord Jesus Christ has done for you.

You could begin your morning by thanking Him.

Small reminders can help redirect a distracted heart.

Five Simple Ways to Love the Lord Jesus Christ Every Day

1. Spend Time With Him

First, make time for the lord Jesus Christ.

Read His Word.

Pray.

Worship.

Be still.

Do not treat time with Him as another item to check off your list.

Instead, approach Him because you want to know Him more.

2. Remember His Goodness

Next, remember what the lord Jesus Christ has done for you.

Think about His mercy.

Think about His patience.

Think about His forgiveness.

Think about the times He carried you through difficult seasons.

Gratitude strengthens love.

Therefore, keep a record of answered prayers and moments when you saw His faithfulness.

3. Make Him Your First Priority

Third, examine your priorities.

Ask yourself what receives your best time and attention.

If entertainment receives hours while prayer receives minutes, something may need to change.

If social media receives your first attention every morning, perhaps the lord Jesus Christ should receive it instead.

Your priorities reveal what matters most to you.

4. Worship Him in Everyday Life

Worship goes beyond singing.

You can worship through obedience.

You can worship through service.

You can worship through generosity.

You can worship through forgiveness.

You can worship through honesty.

You can worship through helping someone who needs encouragement.

Consequently, let your whole life become an expression of love for the lord Jesus Christ.

5. Make Him Known

Finally, share what you have learned.

Tell someone about Jesus.

Encourage someone who feels hopeless.

Share a Scripture.

Pray with someone.

Live in a way that points people toward Him.

You do not need a large platform.

You simply need a willing heart.

What If You Are Struggling to Love Jesus?

Sometimes, we know what Scripture says, but our hearts feel distant.

If that describes you, do not pretend.

Instead, come honestly to the lord Jesus Christ.

Tell Him where you are.

Tell Him what you are struggling with.

Ask Him to help you love Him more.

Remember that spiritual growth often happens one step at a time.

You may not change every habit overnight.

However, you can make one decision today.

Put the lord Jesus Christ first.

Then, tomorrow, make that choice again.

Over time, those choices can reshape your life.

Remember That He Loved Us First

Perhaps the greatest motivation for loving the lord Jesus Christ is remembering His love for us.

First John 4:19 says:

“We love him, because he first loved us.”

That changes everything.

We do not love Him because we are trying to earn His love.

Instead, we respond to the love He has already shown.

When we remember His mercy, our hearts become thankful.

When we remember His sacrifice, our hearts become humble.

When we remember His faithfulness, our hearts become stronger.

Therefore, the more we understand His love, the more we have reason to love Him in return.

A Simple Daily Practice

Starting tomorrow, try this simple five-minute practice.

First, thank the lord Jesus Christ for three things.

Second, read a short passage of Scripture.

Third, ask Him to help you love Him with all your heart, soul, and strength.

Fourth, identify one person you can encourage.

Finally, choose one action that puts your faith into practice.

Five minutes may not seem like much.

Nevertheless, consistent small steps can create lasting change.

Now, slow down for a moment.

Forget the notifications.

Forget the deadlines.

Forget the pressure.

Forget what everyone else is doing.

Ask yourself these questions:

What receives most of my attention?

What receives most of my time?

What occupies my thoughts?

What do I pursue when nobody is watching?

Does my daily life show that I love the lord Jesus Christ?

These questions may challenge us.

However, they can also help us.

Because sometimes the answer is not that we need to do more.

Sometimes, we simply need to put first things first again.

The Most Important Thing Is Still the Most Important Thing

Life will continue to get busy.

Bills will come.

Schedules will change.

Children will grow.

Jobs will change.

Technology will advance.

World events will continue to shift.

Yet, one truth remains.

The most important thing is to love the lord Jesus Christ with all your heart, soul, and strength.

Do not allow success to replace Him.

Do not allow busyness to crowd Him out.

Do not allow disappointment to push Him away.

Do not allow entertainment to consume the time that belongs to Him.

Instead, make Him your first love.

Make Him your daily focus.

Make His Word your guide.

Make worship part of your life.

Make His love visible through your actions.

And, above all, remember that He loved us first.

Your Challenge for This Week

This week, create one physical reminder of the most important thing.

Write “Love the Lord Jesus Christ First” on a card.

Place it beside your bed.

Put it on your desk.

Keep it in your Bible.

Set it as a phone reminder.

Then, every time you see it, stop for a moment.

Thank the lord Jesus Christ.

Talk to Him.

Remember His goodness.

And ask Him to help you love Him with everything you have.

Because when the lord Jesus Christ becomes our first priority, everything else finds its proper place.

So, let us not simply say that we love Him.

Let us live it.

Let us show it.

Let us teach it.

Let us share it.

And let us make Him known.

The most important thing is not what we own, what we achieve, or what people think about us.

The most important thing is that we love the lord Jesus Christ with all our heart, all our soul, and all our strength.
