Psalm 46: The Lord Jesus Is Our Refuge and Strength
Life can change in a moment. One day, everything may seem calm. Then suddenly, trouble arrives. A financial problem appears. A relationship becomes difficult. Bad news comes from the doctor. A job is lost. Fear begins to grow.
However, Psalm 46 gives us a powerful reminder: we do not have to face trouble alone. The Lord Jesus is our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help.
Psalm 46 teaches us how to remain steady when everything around us seems to be falling apart.
The Lord Jesus Is Our Refuge
Psalm 46:1 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
When we replace “God” with the name of the Lord Jesus, we see a beautiful truth: the Lord Jesus is our refuge and strength.
A refuge is a safe place. It is somewhere we can run when danger comes. Therefore, when life becomes difficult, we can run to the Lord Jesus.
Notice that the verse does not say that trouble will never come. Instead, it tells us that the Lord Jesus is present in trouble.
That difference matters.
We may not always be able to prevent difficult situations. Nevertheless, we can know where to turn when they arrive.
Do Not Fear When Everything Shakes
Psalm 46:2–3 describes a frightening situation. The earth may be removed. Mountains may be carried into the sea. Waters may roar. Mountains may shake.
These verses paint a picture of complete chaos.
Yet the psalmist says:
“Therefore will not we fear.”
Why?
The answer is simple. Our confidence does not come from stable circumstances. Our confidence comes from the Lord Jesus.
For example, imagine standing in a house during a powerful storm. The wind is shaking the windows. The rain is pounding the roof. Trees are moving violently outside.
You cannot control the storm. However, you can remain calm when you know you are in a secure shelter.
In the same way, the storms of life may shake us, but they do not have to destroy our faith.
There Is a River of Gladness
Psalm 46:4 speaks about a river whose streams make glad the city of the Lord Jesus.
A river represents life, refreshment, and provision. While the world around us may experience confusion, the Lord Jesus provides what His people need.
Sometimes our circumstances look dry. We may feel spiritually tired. We may wonder how we will continue.
Nevertheless, the Lord Jesus can refresh our hearts.
Therefore, do not allow difficult circumstances to convince you that the Lord Jesus has forgotten you. His presence remains your source of strength.
The Lord Jesus Is in the Midst
Psalm 46:5 says:
“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.”
The central message is powerful: the Lord Jesus is in the midst of His people.
When the Lord Jesus is at the center, we have a foundation that cannot easily be shaken.
People may disappoint us. Circumstances may change. Plans may fail. However, the Lord Jesus remains faithful.
Consequently, we should not build our hope entirely on money, careers, possessions, governments, or other people. Those things can change.
The Lord Jesus does not change.
The Lord Jesus Can Bring Peace
Psalm 46:6 describes nations raging and kingdoms moving. It sounds very much like the troubled world we see around us.
Wars continue. Nations struggle for power. Families experience conflict. Communities face uncertainty.
Yet Psalm 46:9 declares that the Lord can make wars cease.
Then comes one of the most familiar statements in Scripture:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
When life becomes noisy, we often need to become still.
Being still does not mean ignoring our problems. Instead, it means refusing to allow fear to control our hearts.
Sometimes we need to stop, pray, open the Scriptures, and remember who the Lord Jesus is.
What Should We Do When Trouble Comes?
Psalm 46 gives us several practical lessons.
First, run to the Lord Jesus instead of running from Him.
Second, choose faith instead of fear.
Third, remember that the Lord Jesus is present even when circumstances look hopeless.
Fourth, be still and allow the Lord Jesus to strengthen your heart.
Finally, trust Him even when you cannot see what He is doing.
Perhaps you are facing a storm today. Perhaps your circumstances seem unstable. Maybe you are carrying a burden that nobody else understands.
If so, remember the message of Psalm 46.
The Lord Jesus is your refuge.
The Lord Jesus is your strength.
The Lord Jesus is your present help in trouble.
Therefore, you do not have to live in fear.
You can stand.
You can pray.
You can trust.
And you can say with confidence:
“The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
The storm may be loud, but the Lord Jesus is greater than the storm. Be still, trust Him, and remember that He is with you.
