The Place to Start: True Wisdom Begins with the Lord Jesus Christ

Have you ever had so much information in front of you that you still did not know what to believe? Today, we can search the internet in seconds. We can read books, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and ask people for advice. Yet, with all this information, many people still struggle to find true wisdom.

So where should we start?

As a Christian writer and teacher, I have learned that knowledge alone does not guarantee wisdom. We can know many facts and still make poor decisions. We can hear excellent advice and still choose the wrong path.

Therefore, Scripture points us to a better starting place.

True wisdom begins with a healthy fear of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible says in Proverbs 9:10:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

That truth changes everything.

Instead of beginning with the opinions of people, we can begin with the Lord Jesus Christ. Instead of trusting every voice on the internet, we can first turn to His Word. Instead of allowing the world to define truth, we can allow Scripture to guide us.

Most importantly, we can begin with the One who knows the beginning, the middle, and the end.

We All Start Somewhere

Every day brings new questions.

Sometimes we ask, “What should I do?”

Other times, we wonder, “Which decision should I make?”

Perhaps we ask, “Can I trust this person?” or “What does the Bible say about this situation?”

Thankfully, we have many places where we can look for information.

Books contain years of research and experience. Teachers can explain difficult subjects. Parents can offer valuable advice. Friends can share lessons they learned through life. Furthermore, the internet gives us access to an enormous amount of information.

However, there is a problem.

Not everything we read is true.

Not every video is accurate. Not every opinion is wise. Not every popular teaching agrees with Scripture.

Therefore, we need a foundation that does not change with every new opinion.

That foundation is the Word of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Where True Wisdom Begins

Proverbs 9:10 gives us a powerful starting point:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

Notice the word beginning.

The fear of the Lord is not presented as one option among many. Scripture identifies it as the beginning of wisdom.

Therefore, if we want true wisdom, we should begin by honoring the Lord Jesus Christ.

If we want biblical wisdom, we should begin with Scripture.

If we want Christian growth, we should begin by seeking the Lord Jesus Christ in prayer and in His Word.

This does not mean that we should stop learning from books, teachers, or other people.

Instead, it means we should place everything we learn under the authority of Scripture.

That distinction matters.

What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?

At first, the word fear might sound frightening.

However, the biblical idea includes reverence, awe, respect, and recognition of who the Lord Jesus Christ is.

When we fear the Lord, we recognize His greatness.

We recognize His authority.

We recognize His holiness.

We recognize His wisdom.

We recognize His power.

We also recognize that our lives depend upon Him.

The Lord Jesus Christ is not simply another teacher offering one opinion among many. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

Therefore, genuine wisdom begins when we stop placing ourselves at the center and acknowledge Him.

Knowledge Is Not the Same as Wisdom

Here is an important lesson.

Knowledge tells us what something is. Wisdom helps us know what to do with what we know.

For example, someone might know everything about nutrition but still make unhealthy choices.

Someone might understand financial principles but still spend money recklessly.

Someone might know that anger can damage relationships but still allow anger to control their words.

Likewise, someone can know many Bible verses and still fail to obey the Word.

Therefore, information alone cannot transform our lives.

We need wisdom.

And biblical wisdom begins with the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Internet Can Give You Information, But It Cannot Replace Scripture

Think about how easy it is to search for an answer today.

You can type a question into a search engine and receive thousands of results.

That convenience can be helpful.

However, it can also create confusion.

One person says one thing.

Another person says something completely different.

A third person confidently says both are wrong.

Suddenly, you have more information but less certainty.

That is why we must learn to filter information through Scripture.

The internet can give us information.

Books can give us information.

People can give us information.

But the Word of the Lord Jesus Christ gives us a trustworthy foundation for spiritual truth.

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us:

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…”

When we spend time in Scripture, we are not simply collecting information.

We are allowing the Word to examine our hearts, challenge our thinking, and direct our lives.

Start With the Word

If you want to grow in wisdom, start with the Bible.

You do not need to read ten chapters every morning.

You do not need to understand every difficult passage immediately.

Instead, begin somewhere.

Read a chapter.

Study a passage.

Write down a verse.

Ask questions.

Pray about what you read.

Then apply what you learn.

For example, suppose you are struggling with forgiveness.

Instead of beginning with social media opinions about forgiveness, begin with Scripture.

Suppose you are struggling with fear.

Again, begin with Scripture.

Suppose you are trying to make an important decision.

Pray first. Search the Scriptures. Then seek wise counsel from mature Christians.

In other words, make the Word of the Lord Jesus Christ your first place to start.

A Story We Can All Understand

Imagine a man named James.

James receives an important opportunity at work. The opportunity could increase his income, but it would also require him to compromise his values.

At first, James asks several friends what they think.

One friend says, “Take the money.”

Another says, “Everybody compromises sometimes.”

A third says, “You only live once. Go for it.”

James becomes confused.

Then he stops.

Instead of asking everyone else first, James opens his Bible and prays.

He begins thinking about integrity, faithfulness, contentment, and obedience.

Eventually, he realizes that making more money is not worth violating his convictions.

The decision costs him financially.

Nevertheless, he has peace because he chose to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

That is biblical wisdom in action.

Wisdom does not always choose the easiest road.

Sometimes wisdom chooses the right road.

The Lord Jesus Christ Loves You

There is another important reason we should seek the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is not merely powerful.

He is also loving, gracious, and merciful.

The message of Scripture shows us that humanity turned away from the Creator. Yet the Lord Jesus Christ made a way for us to return to Him.

John 3:16 says:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Because you asked me to use the Lord Jesus Christ rather than the word you normally avoid, I will emphasize this truth in simple terms:

The Lord Jesus Christ loves you.

He cares about your life.

He cares about your future.

He cares about your family.

He cares about your struggles.

He cares about your spiritual growth.

Therefore, seeking Him is not a burden. It is an invitation.

Wisdom Begins With Humility

Furthermore, wisdom requires humility.

We must be willing to admit that we do not know everything.

Sometimes our biggest problem is not a lack of information.

Sometimes our biggest problem is that we already believe we have all the answers.

Humility says, “Lord Jesus Christ, teach me.”

Humility says, “Show me where I am wrong.”

Humility says, “Help me understand Your Word.”

Humility says, “Lead me in the right way.”

That attitude creates room for spiritual growth.

Do Not Believe Everything You Hear

We live in a world filled with competing voices.

Therefore, Christians must develop spiritual discernment.

First, compare teachings with Scripture.

Second, examine the fruit of the teaching.

Third, pray for wisdom.

Fourth, avoid accepting something simply because it is popular.

Finally, remember that confidence does not make a teaching true.

A person can speak loudly and still be wrong.

A video can receive millions of views and still contain error.

A book can become a bestseller and still disagree with Scripture.

Popularity is not the same as truth.

Build a Daily Bible Habit

If you want to grow in biblical wisdom, create a simple routine.

You could begin each morning with ten minutes.

First, pray.

Then, read a portion of Scripture.

Next, write down one thing that stood out to you.

After that, ask yourself, “How should this change the way I live today?”

Finally, put it into practice.

That simple habit can become powerful over time.

You do not have to change everything overnight.

Instead, take one faithful step at a time.

Read. Pray. Learn. Apply. Repeat.

What Should You Do Today?

Today, you can make a fresh start.

First, choose a quiet place.

Next, open your Bible.

Then, ask the Lord Jesus Christ to give you understanding.

Read slowly.

Think about what you read.

Write down what you learn.

Afterward, thank Him for His Word.

Finally, decide how you will apply it.

Do not wait for the perfect time.

Start today.

Start small.

Start faithfully.

The place to start is with the Lord Jesus Christ.

We have many places where we can search for knowledge.

Books can teach us.

People can advise us.

Experience can instruct us.

The internet can provide information.

However, none of these should replace the foundation of biblical truth.

The best place to start is with the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word.

When we honor Him, we gain the right perspective.

When we study Scripture, we learn His ways.

When we pray, we draw closer to Him.

When we obey His Word, wisdom becomes practical.

Therefore, do not allow the noise of the world to become louder than the voice of Scripture.

Do not allow information to replace wisdom.

Do not allow popular opinion to replace biblical truth.

Instead, start where wisdom starts.

Start with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today, open His Word.

Today, pray.

Today, listen.

Today, learn.

Today, obey.

And as you continue walking with Him, allow the Lord Jesus Christ to teach you, shape you, correct you, and lead you.

Because when the Lord Jesus Christ is your starting point, you have begun in the right place.
