Have you ever faced a difficult season and suddenly forgotten how many times the Lord Jesus Christ has already helped you?
Perhaps you prayed when there seemed to be no answer. Yet, the Lord Jesus made a way. Maybe you faced a financial struggle, a family problem, a health crisis, or a season of uncertainty. Somehow, you made it through.
However, when the next problem arrived, fear returned.
Why does that happen?
Sometimes, we forget.
Therefore, today I want to share a simple but powerful spiritual habit: remembering what the Lord Jesus Christ has done.
As a Christian writer and student of Scripture, I have learned that remembering is more than thinking about the past. It can strengthen faith, renew gratitude, and help us face tomorrow with greater hope.
So, let us look at what Scripture teaches us about remembering the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ and how this spiritual habit can change the way we face difficult seasons.
Why Do We Forget?
Throughout the Old Testament, the children of Israel experienced remarkable deliverance.
The Lord brought them out of Egypt. He opened the Red Sea. He provided food in the wilderness. He gave them water when they were thirsty. He protected them and led them through places they could not have conquered by themselves.
Yet, they repeatedly forgot.
Psalm 78 describes this problem. The people witnessed mighty works, but they did not always remember them.
The problem was not that they lacked evidence.
The problem was that they failed to remember.
That lesson still matters today.
For example, imagine someone who receives a financial blessing after praying for months. They are grateful. They praise the Lord Jesus. They tell everyone about His goodness.
Then, six months later, another financial problem appears.
Suddenly, fear takes over.
They may ask, “What am I going to do?”
But remembering gives them another question:
“What has the Lord Jesus already done for me?”
That question can change our perspective.
Remembering Builds Faith
Faith grows when we remember the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
David understood this principle.
Before facing Goliath, David remembered how the Lord had delivered him from a lion and a bear.
David did not know exactly how the next battle would unfold. However, he knew what the Lord had done before.
That memory strengthened his confidence.
Likewise, we can create our own spiritual habit of remembering.
When we face a new battle, we can look back and say:
“I remember when the Lord Jesus made a way.”
“I remember when He answered my prayer.”
“I remember when He gave me strength.”
“I remember when I thought everything was lost, but He brought me through.”
Therefore, remembering does not mean living in the past.
Instead, remembering helps us carry the lessons of the past into the present.
Psalm 9 Shows Us How to Remember
Psalm 9 gives us a beautiful example.
David begins by praising the Lord:
“I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.”
— Psalm 9:1, KJV
Notice what David does.
First, he praises.
Second, he remembers.
Third, he tells others about the wonderful works of the Lord.
David does not allow his present circumstances to erase his memory of past faithfulness.
Instead, he deliberately remembers.
That is an important spiritual discipline.
When we remember what the Lord Jesus has done, we remind ourselves that our current situation is not the whole story.
Remembering Changes Our Focus
Difficult circumstances can make us focus only on what is happening right now.
The bill is due.
The relationship is difficult.
The answer has not arrived.
The door has not opened.
The future seems uncertain.
As a result, our problems can become larger in our minds than the One who has carried us through previous problems.
However, remembering shifts our focus.
Instead of saying, “I cannot see a way,” we can say, “The Lord Jesus can make a way.”
Instead of saying, “I have never faced anything like this,” we can say, “I have faced difficult situations before, and the Lord Jesus brought me through.”
Instead of saying, “Everything is falling apart,” we can remember that the Lord Jesus has remained faithful through every season.
That does not mean we ignore reality.
Rather, we face reality with faith.
Create a “Remember” List
One practical way to develop this spiritual habit is to keep a remembering list.
You can use a notebook, journal, phone, or Bible study app.
Write down specific things the Lord Jesus has done in your life.
For example:
- A prayer He answered.
- A door He opened.
- A danger He brought you through.
- A person He placed in your life.
- A difficult season He helped you survive.
- A financial need He provided for.
- A lesson you learned through hardship.
- A time when He gave you peace.
- A Scripture that encouraged you.
- A blessing you almost forgot.
Then, review the list regularly.
Especially review it when you feel discouraged.
Why?
Because discouragement often makes us forget.
However, a record of the Lord’s faithfulness gives our minds something true to consider.
Teach Your Family to Remember
Remembering should not stop with us.
We can teach our children and families to remember the works of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament repeatedly encouraged God’s people to tell the next generation about His works.
Psalm 78:4 says:
“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
What a powerful responsibility.
Our families need more than possessions.
They need stories of faith.
Tell your children how the Lord Jesus helped you.
Tell them about the prayers He answered.
Tell them about difficult seasons you survived.
Tell them how the Lord Jesus gave you strength when you felt weak.
In this way, your testimony becomes part of their spiritual foundation.
Remembering Produces Gratitude
Remembering and gratitude belong together.
When we remember what the Lord Jesus has done, thanksgiving naturally follows.
Think about a person who has helped you during one of the hardest moments of your life.
Years later, you may still remember that kindness.
Why?
Because meaningful experiences stay with us.
Likewise, we should regularly remember the goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Psalm 103:2 gives us this powerful reminder:
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
Notice those final words:
“Forget not.”
That is important.
We can become so busy asking for the next blessing that we forget to thank the Lord Jesus for the blessings we already received.
Therefore, pause.
Remember.
Give thanks.
Remembering Does Not Mean Everything Is Easy
There is another important lesson.
Remembering the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus does not mean that every problem disappears immediately.
Faith does not require pretending that life is easy.
Sometimes, you may still cry.
Sometimes, you may still have questions.
Sometimes, you may need to wait.
Sometimes, the answer may not come when you expect it.
Nevertheless, remembering gives you something to hold on to while you wait.
You can say:
“I do not understand everything happening right now, but I remember what the Lord Jesus has already done.”
That is powerful faith.
What If You Feel Like You Have Nothing to Remember?
Perhaps you are reading this during a very painful season.
Maybe you are struggling to see anything good.
If so, start small.
Remember the people who have encouraged you.
Remember the times you received unexpected help.
Remember the strength you had when you thought you could not continue.
Remember the Scriptures that carried you.
Remember the prayers you have seen answered.
Most importantly, remember the promises of the Word.
The Lord Jesus Christ has not changed.
Hebrews 13:8 declares:
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
Therefore, His faithfulness in the past can strengthen our confidence in the present.
Remember Before You Panic
Here is a simple practice you can begin today.
When a problem appears, pause before you panic.
Take a few moments to remember.
Ask yourself:
What has the Lord Jesus already brought me through?
Then write down three answers.
Next, thank Him for those three things.
Finally, pray about the situation you are facing now.
This simple process can help interrupt fear and replace it with gratitude and faith.
It does not remove every problem.
However, it can change the way you approach the problem.
A Personal Challenge for This Week
This week, develop the spiritual habit of remembering.
Take ten minutes each day.
Write down one thing the Lord Jesus has done for you.
At the end of seven days, you will have seven reminders of His faithfulness.
Then read your list whenever discouragement comes.
Over time, your list will grow.
More importantly, your awareness of His faithfulness can grow with it.
