Cast Away: Stop Carrying What the Lord Jesus Never Asked You to Carry
Have you ever carried a burden for so long that you forgot what it felt like to live without it?
Maybe you are carrying fear about tomorrow. Perhaps you are carrying shame from yesterday. Maybe you are carrying financial pressure, family problems, disappointment, grief, or a mistake you wish you could undo.
Yet, what if the burden crushing you today was never meant for you to carry alone?
As someone who has spent years studying Scripture and encouraging others to trust the Lord Jesus Christ, I have learned an important truth: we do not have to carry every burden that comes our way. Scripture teaches us how to surrender our burdens, trust the Lord Jesus, and continue moving forward in faith.
Today, we are going to look at one powerful word: cast.
We will discover what it means to cast our burdens on the Lord Jesus Christ, why we struggle to release them, and how we can learn to surrender them completely.
“Cast Thy Burden Upon the LORD”
Psalm 55:22 gives us this powerful promise:
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” — Psalm 55:22, KJV
Notice the first word: cast.
David did not say to admire his burden.
He did not say to carry it carefully.
He did not say to hold onto it until things became easier.
He said to cast it.
The idea behind the Hebrew word is powerful. It carries the sense of throwing, hurling, or placing something away from yourself.
In other words, David gives us an active picture.
Take the burden off yourself and put it on the Lord Jesus.
That changes the way we look at surrender.
David Knew What It Meant to Carry Heavy Burdens
King David understood pressure.
He carried the responsibility of leading Israel. He faced enemies who wanted him dead. He experienced betrayal from people close to him. He endured family conflict. He also made serious mistakes.
David’s life was not perfect.
Nevertheless, David knew where to turn.
When he was afraid, he cried to the Lord.
When he sinned, he repented.
When enemies surrounded him, he trusted the Lord.
When his heart was broken, he brought his pain before the Lord Jesus.
That example gives us hope.
Your mistakes do not disqualify you from seeking the Lord Jesus.
Your past does not have to control your future.
Your failures do not have to become your identity.
Instead, you can repent, receive mercy, and keep walking with the Lord Jesus Christ.
What Burden Are You Carrying?
Now, let’s make this personal.
What are you carrying today?
Maybe you are carrying the fear of losing your job.
Maybe you are worried about your children.
Perhaps you are struggling with a difficult relationship.
Maybe someone hurt you years ago, and you still replay the situation in your mind.
Perhaps you have made a mistake that continues to accuse you.
You may even be carrying spiritual shame.
You know you should pray, but you feel unworthy.
You know you should worship, but your mind is overwhelmed.
You want to move forward, but your past keeps pulling you backward.
However, the Lord Jesus says you do not have to remain trapped beneath those burdens.
Some Burdens Become Too Heavy
Imagine carrying a backpack filled with heavy rocks.
At first, you might manage it.
You tell yourself, “I can handle this.”
So you keep walking.
Then someone adds another rock.
You keep walking.
Another rock comes.
You keep walking.
Eventually, your shoulders hurt. Your back aches. Your steps become slower.
Yet the strange thing is this: you could put the backpack down at any time.
Many of us live that way spiritually.
We carry yesterday’s regret.
Then we add today’s anxiety.
Then we add tomorrow’s fear.
Soon, we become emotionally and spiritually exhausted.
Therefore, we need to learn the discipline of casting our burdens on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Casting Is Different From Setting Down
There is an important difference between setting something down and casting it away.
If you set a heavy object beside you, you can pick it up again.
You may even keep looking at it.
You may think about it.
You may worry about it.
You may return to it.
However, when you cast something away, you intentionally send it away from yourself.
That gives us a powerful spiritual picture.
When we cast our burdens on the Lord Jesus, we are saying:
“Lord Jesus, this is too heavy for me. I trust You with it.”
Then we must resist the temptation to pick it back up.
Stop Picking Up What You Already Surrendered
Sometimes our greatest problem is not surrendering a burden.
It is taking it back.
We pray:
“Lord Jesus, I give You my fear.”
Then five minutes later, we start worrying again.
We say:
“Lord Jesus, I trust You with my family.”
Then we spend the entire night imagining everything that could go wrong.
We say:
“Lord Jesus, I forgive that person.”
Then we replay the offense the next morning.
We must learn to recognize this pattern.
Casting your burden means trusting the Lord Jesus after you release it.
That does not mean you stop caring.
It means you stop trying to control what belongs in His hands.
The Lord Jesus Will Sustain You
Psalm 55:22 does not merely tell us to cast our burdens away.
It gives us a promise.
“He shall sustain thee.”
That means the Lord Jesus does not simply tell you to release your burden and then leave you alone.
He promises to sustain you.
When you are weak, He can strengthen you.
When you are confused, He can guide you.
When you are discouraged, His Word can encourage you.
When you fall, you can repent and rise again.
When you feel alone, remember that the Lord Jesus has not abandoned you.
Casting Your Burden Does Not Mean Ignoring Your Responsibilities
However, surrender does not mean irresponsibility.
If you have bills, you still need to manage your finances wisely.
If you have a difficult conversation to have, you may still need to have it.
If you have hurt someone, you may need to apologize.
If you have made a mistake, you may need to correct it.
Casting your burden means that you stop allowing anxiety to control you while you faithfully do what you can.
Do your part, and trust the Lord Jesus with what you cannot control.
That is a powerful way to live by faith.
What About Shame?
One of the heaviest burdens people carry is shame.
We remember what we did.
We remember what someone did to us.
We remember opportunities we missed.
We remember words we wish we had never spoken.
However, repentance gives us a way forward.
The Lord Jesus Christ calls us to turn away from sin and turn toward Him.
First John 1:9 says:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Therefore, do not allow yesterday’s failure to become today’s identity.
If you have sinned, repent.
If you need forgiveness, seek it.
If you need to make something right, do it.
Then keep walking.
Do not continue carrying what the Lord Jesus has already given you a way to surrender.
What About Fear?
Fear can become another heavy burden.
We worry about what might happen.
We imagine the worst.
We replay possible disasters in our minds.
Yet most of the things we fear have not happened.
That means we can spend today suffering over a tomorrow that may never arrive.
Instead, bring your fears to the Lord Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 gives us a better path:
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto the Lord Jesus. And the peace of the Lord Jesus, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Prayer changes our focus.
Instead of allowing fear to control our thoughts, we bring our concerns to the Lord Jesus.
Then we trust Him one day at a time.
A Simple Three-Step Way to Cast Your Burdens
When you feel overwhelmed, try this simple process.
1. Name the Burden
Be honest.
Do not hide it.
Say exactly what is troubling you.
“Lord Jesus, I am worried about my finances.”
“Lord Jesus, I am afraid about my future.”
“Lord Jesus, I am carrying resentment.”
“Lord Jesus, I feel ashamed about my past.”
Naming the burden helps you recognize what you are actually carrying.
2. Give It to the Lord Jesus
Do not merely talk about the burden.
Surrender it.
Tell the Lord Jesus:
“I cannot carry this properly by myself. I give it to You.”
Then trust His wisdom.
3. Refuse to Pick It Back Up
This may be the hardest step.
When your mind starts worrying again, remind yourself:
“I already gave this to the Lord Jesus.”
Then pray again.
Read Scripture.
Take the next faithful step.
Do not allow your emotions to convince you that you must carry the burden again.
You Were Not Designed to Live Crushed by Burdens
Think about a person walking with a heavy load.
Eventually, the weight affects everything.
It affects how they walk.
It affects how they think.
It affects how they interact with others.
It affects their joy.
Likewise, unresolved burdens can affect our spiritual lives.
That is why surrender matters.
The Lord Jesus wants us to trust Him.
He wants us to bring our burdens to Him.
He wants us to learn that faith does not mean pretending that problems do not exist.
Instead, faith means believing that the Lord Jesus is greater than the problem.
Your Burden Is Not Bigger Than the Lord Jesus
Whatever you are facing today, remember this:
Your problem may be big.
But the Lord Jesus is greater.
Your situation may be confusing.
But the Lord Jesus knows the way.
Your heart may be broken.
But the Lord Jesus can sustain you.
Your past may be painful.
But the Lord Jesus can give you a new beginning.
Your future may look uncertain.
But the Lord Jesus is already there.
Therefore, cast your burden.
Do not simply place it beside you.
Do not hold onto a piece of it.
Do not keep checking on it.
Cast it.
Throw it into the hands of the One who is able to sustain you.
A Personal Commitment
Today, I choose to cast my burdens on the Lord Jesus Christ.
I will not allow fear to control my decisions.
I will not allow shame to define who I am.
I will not allow yesterday’s mistakes to determine tomorrow’s direction.
I will repent when I fall.
I will forgive when I am hurt.
I will pray when I am afraid.
I will trust when I cannot see the outcome.
I will do what I can and surrender what I cannot control.
Most importantly, I will remember the promise of Psalm 55:22:
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.”
