Have You Ever Needed Mercy More Than Justice?

What if the greatest blessing in your life came disguised as something painful?

Perhaps you made a mistake that cost you dearly. Maybe you hurt someone you love. Perhaps you carried guilt that seemed impossible to erase. In those moments, you didn’t need more condemnation. Instead, you needed mercy.

As a Christian writer and Bible teacher, I have studied the teachings of Jesus for years. Moreover, I have discovered that one of the most powerful truths in Scripture is this: the lord Jesus Christ delights in showing mercy to undeserving people.

Today, we will explore what mercy really means, why it matters, how it differs from grace, and how you can show mercy even when it feels impossible.

Most importantly, we will discover why Jesus said:

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

— Matthew 5:7 NIV

What Are Severe Mercies?

At first glance, the phrase “severe mercies” sounds like a contradiction.

After all, mercy feels gentle while severe sounds painful.

Yet many believers have discovered that some of life’s hardest moments eventually reveal the deepest acts of mercy from the lord Jesus Christ.

For example, a closed door may protect you from future harm. Likewise, a painful consequence may prevent a greater disaster. Sometimes a broken dream redirects you toward a better purpose.

Although those moments hurt, they can become severe mercies.

In hindsight, many Christians can look back and see that what felt like punishment was actually protection.

A Story We Can All Relate To

Imagine a young man who spends years chasing success.

He ignores his family. He neglects his faith. He believes money will solve every problem.

Then suddenly he loses his job.

At first, he feels angry and devastated.

However, during that difficult season, he reconnects with his family. He returns to church. He begins praying again. Eventually, he discovers a deeper relationship with the lord Jesus Christ than he ever had before.

Years later, he realizes losing that job was one of the greatest blessings of his life.

The pain was real.

Yet the mercy was greater.

Many of us have lived a similar story.

Why We All Need Mercy

The truth is uncomfortable.

Every person has sinned.

Every person has failed.

Every person has fallen short of the perfect standards of the lord Jesus Christ.

Because of sin, humanity deserves judgment.

Yet Scripture reveals an incredible truth:

“But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)”

— Ephesians 2:4-5 NLT

The lord Jesus Christ did not leave us in our broken condition.

Instead, He stepped into our world.

He carried our sins.

He paid our debt.

He conquered death.

As a result, those who trust Him can receive forgiveness and eternal life.

That is mercy beyond measure.

Grace and Mercy: What’s the Difference?

Many believers use these words interchangeably.

However, they are not identical.

Grace is receiving something you do not deserve.

Mercy is not receiving something you do deserve.

For example, imagine standing before a judge.

You are guilty.

The judge chooses not to impose the penalty you deserve.

That is mercy.

Then the judge pays your fine and gives you a new beginning.

That is grace.

The lord Jesus Christ gives both.

He removes our guilt through mercy.

Then He gives us eternal life through grace.

Why Is It So Hard to Show Mercy?

If we’re honest, showing mercy can feel difficult.

After all, people hurt us.

Some betray our trust.

Others spread lies.

Still others leave deep emotional wounds.

Consequently, our natural response is often revenge, bitterness, or resentment.

Yet Jesus calls His followers to something higher.

He calls us to mercy.

Not because people deserve it.

But because we have received it.

When we remember how much we have been forgiven, we become more willing to forgive others.

Three Practical Ways to Show Mercy Today

1. Choose Forgiveness Over Revenge

First, release the desire to get even.

Although forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing, it frees your heart from bitterness.

Therefore, choose forgiveness even when it feels difficult.

2. Extend Compassion to Someone Struggling

Next, remember that many people are fighting battles you cannot see.

As a result, respond with patience and understanding.

A kind word can change someone’s entire day.

3. Give Others a Second Chance

Finally, remember how often the lord Jesus Christ has given you another opportunity.

Likewise, look for ways to extend the same kindness to others.

Mercy often begins with giving people room to grow.

What Happens When We Show Mercy?

Merciful people transform relationships.

They heal broken families.

They restore friendships.

They create environments where healing becomes possible.

More importantly, they reflect the character of the lord Jesus Christ.

The world expects retaliation.

However, mercy points people toward the Savior.

That is why Jesus said:

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

Merciful people live differently because they understand what mercy has done for them.
