I Will Walk in the Spirit: A Personal Commitment from Galatians 5

I Will Stand Fast in the Liberty of Christ

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” — Galatians 5:1 KJV

Have you ever been set free from something, only to find yourself returning to it?

Perhaps you finally broke away from a destructive habit. Maybe you escaped a relationship that was hurting you. Or perhaps the Lord Jesus brought you out of fear, guilt, shame, or a life controlled by sin.

Yet freedom requires a decision.

I must choose to remain free.

Galatians 5 gives me that challenge. The apostle Paul reminds me that the liberty I have through Christ is precious. Therefore, I will stand fast in that liberty. I will not willingly return to bondage. I will walk by faith, live by love, and follow the Spirit.

I Will Stand Firm in My Freedom

Paul begins with a powerful command:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.”

The Lord Jesus did not set me free so I could return to the chains that once controlled me.

Therefore, I will stand firm.

I will not allow fear to control me. I will not allow guilt to keep me trapped in yesterday. I will not allow religious traditions to replace a genuine relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Freedom does not mean I can do whatever I want. Instead, freedom means I can choose to serve the Lord Jesus from a willing heart.

My commitment: I will stand fast in the liberty Christ has given me.

I Will Live by Faith, Not by Religious Performance

Paul warns the Galatians about trusting in circumcision and the works of the law for justification.

The lesson reaches me today.

I cannot earn salvation through religious performance. I cannot impress the Lord Jesus with outward appearances while my heart remains unchanged.

Galatians 5:6 says:

“For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.”

Therefore, I will put my faith into action.

My faith will affect how I treat people. It will affect how I speak. It will affect how I forgive. It will affect how I respond when someone hurts me.

Faith that works through love changes the way I live.

I Will Refuse to Let Anything Hinder Me

Paul asked:

“Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?”

That question deserves my attention.

I may start my Christian journey with excitement, but distractions can slowly pull me away. Wrong relationships, unhealthy desires, bitterness, pride, false teaching, and worldly attractions can become obstacles.

Therefore, I will examine what is influencing me.

If something consistently pulls me away from the truth, I will not continue embracing it.

A little leaven can affect the whole lump. Likewise, a small compromise can eventually influence my entire life.

My commitment: I will protect my spiritual life from influences that pull me away from the truth.

I Will Use My Freedom to Serve Others

Galatians 5:13 gives me another important instruction:

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

My freedom is not permission to live selfishly.

Instead, I will use my freedom to serve.

I will help when I can. I will encourage someone who is discouraged. I will forgive when forgiveness is difficult. I will speak words that build people up instead of tearing them down.

The next verse says:

“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

Therefore, I will make love practical.

I Will Walk in the Spirit

This is perhaps the most important personal commitment in this chapter:

“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” — Galatians 5:16

Every day, I face a choice.

My flesh wants one thing. The Spirit leads me another way.

When anger tells me to retaliate, I will choose self-control.

When pride tells me to prove myself, I will choose humility.

When temptation calls me, I will choose obedience.

When bitterness grows, I will choose forgiveness.

I cannot win this battle by my own strength. Therefore, I will seek the Lord Jesus and allow His Spirit to lead my decisions.

I Will Crucify the Flesh

Paul says:

“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

That means I must take sin seriously.

I cannot keep feeding the desires that I claim I want to overcome.

Therefore, I will put sinful desires to death instead of making excuses for them.

I will ask myself difficult questions.

What am I watching?

What am I saying?

What am I thinking?

What am I allowing into my heart?

Who is influencing me?

Where am I compromising?

Then, by the help of the Lord Jesus, I will make changes.

I Will Produce Spiritual Fruit

Galatians 5:22–23 gives me a picture of the life I should pursue:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.”

I want these qualities to become visible in my life.

Therefore, I will pursue love.

I will pursue joy.

I will pursue peace.

I will practice patience.

I will show kindness.

I will choose goodness.

I will strengthen my faith.

I will practice meekness.

I will develop self-control.

These qualities should not remain words on a page. They should become evidence of a Spirit-led life.

My Personal Commitment

Galatians 5 challenges me to stop being merely a hearer and become a doer.

So today, I make this commitment:

I will stand fast in the liberty Christ has given me.

I will live by faith.

I will serve others in love.

I will reject the works of the flesh.

I will crucify sinful desires.

I will walk in the Spirit.

I will pursue the fruit of the Spirit.

I will not allow pride, envy, bitterness, or anger to control me.

Most importantly, I will allow the Lord Jesus to change me from the inside out.

Galatians 5:25 gives me the final challenge:

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

I am not merely going to say that I belong to Christ.

I will live like I belong to Him.

Today, I choose to walk in the Spirit.

Today, I choose liberty.

Today, I choose love.

Today, I choose obedience.

And by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, I will keep walking.
