The One Lord Jesus: Understanding the Oneness of God
The question has been asked: “Is there a God beside Me?” The answer given is clear—there is none. When the Lord Jesus declares that He knows no other, it invites us to reflect deeply. Should we believe otherwise when He Himself affirms His uniqueness? This truth forms the foundation of understanding who the Lord Jesus is and how He reveals Himself to humanity.
The Lord Jesus Alone Is God
Scripture records the Lord Jesus saying, “Look unto Me, all the ends of the earth, and be saved: for I am God, and beside Me there is no Savior.” This powerful statement removes all doubt. There is no alternative, no equal, and no substitute.
Furthermore, He declares that He stretched forth the heavens alone. No one stood beside Him. No one advised Him. Creation itself testifies to His singular authority and power. Therefore, the idea of multiple divine persons acting independently contradicts this clear declaration.
Misunderstanding the Terms: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Many struggle with the biblical terms Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. These titles can appear to suggest separate beings. However, this confusion often comes from a lack of understanding rather than the text itself.
When Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” it remains a relevant question today. Do we truly grasp what Scripture is communicating? The Lord Jesus is one Spirit who reveals Himself in different ways—not multiple gods, but one divine identity expressed in various roles.
The Lord Jesus Revealed in Flesh
The Bible refers to Jesus Christ as both the only begotten Son and the great God and Savior. When these truths are combined, a powerful revelation emerges: the Lord Jesus is God manifested in the flesh.
He came as a servant, taking on human form so that we could see, know, and relate to Him. Although His divine nature is limitless, He chose to dwell in a human body. This visible expression allowed humanity to encounter the invisible Spirit in a tangible way.
Because of this, He could say, “I and my Father are one.” The fullness of the Godhead dwelled in Him, not partially, but completely.
The Purpose of the Son
As the Son, the Lord Jesus was born of a woman and lived under the law. This role was not eternal in the same way His divine nature is eternal. Instead, it was a mission.
He came to bring redemption. Through His sacrifice, He provided a way for humanity to be restored. His death, burial, and resurrection opened the door for eternal life. This act was not separate from God—it was God Himself reaching down to save His creation.
The Apostolic Foundation
The apostles, who first preached the Gospel, established a clear pattern. Their message was consistent and unified:
- Repentance
- Water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ
- Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost
This was not a variation of teachings but a single, unified message. In the book of Acts, this pattern appears repeatedly without exception. It demonstrates the authority and approval of the Lord Jesus.
Repentance brings a renewed conscience. Baptism signifies the remission of sins. The Holy Ghost becomes the seal of belonging to the Lord Jesus. Together, these steps form the complete response to the Gospel.
Knowing the Lord Jesus
Scripture reveals that the world did not recognize the One who created it when He came in the flesh. This highlights a profound truth: the Lord Jesus, who made the heavens and the earth, walked among humanity unrecognized.
He took on a humble form to shed His blood for our sins. Through His resurrection, He gave us the hope of life beyond death. Understanding this requires revelation through the Holy Ghost, which opens our eyes to spiritual truth.
The Call to Obedience
In Acts chapter 19, believers who had previously been baptized under John’s baptism chose to be baptized again in the name of Jesus Christ. Why? Because they recognized a deeper truth.
This demonstrates humility and a willingness to follow the correct teaching. It shows that obedience matters more than tradition. As the saying goes, it is better to be right than merely comfortable.
Unity in the Church
The Lord Jesus calls His followers into unity—one mind and one body. Division often arises from misunderstanding or incomplete teaching. However, truth brings alignment and clarity.
By returning to the original message of the apostles, believers can experience unity and confidence in their faith. This unity reflects the nature of the Lord Jesus Himself, one, not divided.
