Steady and Unchanging: Why You Can Always Count on the Lord Jesus Christ
Have you ever felt like your life changed overnight?
One day, everything seems normal. Then suddenly, your plans fall apart. A relationship changes. Your finances become uncertain. Your health, career, family, or future may suddenly look different. Even the world around you can feel unstable.
Yet, there is good news.
While everything around you may change, the Lord Jesus Christ does not change.
I have spent years studying and sharing biblical truth because I believe people need more than temporary encouragement. We need an anchor that will hold when life becomes difficult. We need truth that does not shift with the culture, circumstances, or opinions of people.
That is why Hebrews 13:8 gives us such powerful hope:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
— Hebrews 13:8 NLT
Therefore, in this article, we will explore the unchanging nature of Jesus Christ, the biblical meaning of His immutability, and why you can trust Him when everything else seems uncertain.
Life Changes, But Jesus Christ Remains Steady
First, consider how quickly life can change.
You may begin the year with a carefully prepared plan. You may have goals for your family, career, finances, ministry, or personal life. However, circumstances can change those plans in a moment.
For example, imagine a man named David.
David works hard. He pays his bills. He loves his family. He plans for retirement. He believes he finally has life under control.
Then, unexpectedly, his company downsizes.
Suddenly, his income changes.
Next, an unexpected expense appears.
Then, one of his children needs help.
Within a few months, David feels as though the ground beneath him has moved.
Perhaps you can relate.
However, David discovers something important. His circumstances changed, but Jesus Christ did not.
His bank account changed.
His plans changed.
His emotions changed.
Yet Jesus Christ remained faithful.
Therefore, David learns to place his confidence in something stronger than circumstances.
He begins to pray.
He searches the Scriptures.
He reminds himself of the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Most importantly, he learns that his peace does not have to depend on everything going according to plan.
That is the power of an unchanging Jesus.
“Jesus Christ Is the Same Yesterday, Today, and Forever”
Hebrews 13:8 gives us one of the clearest statements about the consistency of Jesus Christ.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Notice the progression.
Yesterday.
Today.
Forever.
His faithfulness does not have an expiration date.
His character does not change with the times.
His truth does not change because popular opinion changes.
His promises do not become outdated because society changes.
Therefore, when you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you are not placing it on shifting ground.
You are building on a firm foundation.
What Does It Mean That Jesus Christ Is Unchanging?
The theological word for God’s unchanging nature is immutability.
In simple terms, immutability means that the Lord Jesus Christ does not change in His essential nature, character, truth, holiness, or faithfulness.
Malachi 3:6 declares:
“I the Lord do not change…”
That truth gives believers confidence.
Think about it.
People can change.
Circumstances can change.
Governments can change.
Technology can change.
Economies can change.
Opinions can change.
Even our emotions can change from one day to another.
However, the Lord Jesus Christ remains steady.
Therefore, we can trust Him when we cannot trust our circumstances.
Jesus Christ Reveals the Father
Furthermore, the identity of Jesus Christ is central to understanding this truth.
The Bible presents Jesus Christ as the visible revelation of the invisible Father.
Jesus said:
“I and my Father are one.”
— John 10:30
He also said:
“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”
— John 14:9
These statements deserve serious attention.
Jesus was not presenting Himself as someone disconnected from the Father. Instead, He revealed the Father to humanity.
John opened his Gospel with these remarkable words:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1
Then John explained that the Word became flesh.
This is the stunning mystery of the incarnation.
The eternal Word came into the world in human flesh.
The Lord Jesus Christ walked among us.
He taught.
He healed.
He forgave.
He showed compassion.
He suffered.
He died.
He rose again.
Therefore, when we look at Jesus Christ, we see the perfect revelation of the Father.
“I and the Father Are One”
Jesus made another remarkable statement in John 10:30:
“I and my Father are one.”
This verse has profound meaning.
Jesus did not merely claim to be a teacher who knew the Father.
He spoke of a unique unity between Himself and the Father.
Likewise, in John 14:9, Jesus told Philip:
“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”
Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ is not simply someone we admire from a distance.
He is the One in whom we can place our faith.
He is our Savior.
He is our Lord.
He is our hope.
And He remains the same.
The Glory Jesus Had Before the World Began
Moreover, Jesus spoke about His glory before the world began.
John 17:5 records His prayer:
“Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”
This statement takes us beyond Bethlehem.
Jesus did not begin to exist when He was born in Bethlehem.
His earthly life was the beginning of His human manifestation, not the beginning of His eternal existence.
The Word was already there.
The Word was with the Father.
And the Word was God.
Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ is not temporary.
He is eternal.
When Everything Around You Feels Like Shifting Sand
Sometimes life feels like a storm.
You wake up with one concern.
By lunchtime, another problem appears.
By evening, you wonder how you will handle tomorrow.
During those moments, fear can become loud.
However, faith reminds us to look beyond the storm.
Think about a lighthouse.
A lighthouse does not stop the waves.
It does not prevent the storm.
It does not control the wind.
Instead, it remains a fixed point that helps people navigate dangerous waters.
That is a helpful picture of the Lord Jesus Christ.
He may not remove every storm immediately.
However, He remains with you through the storm.
He gives you direction.
He gives you hope.
He gives you strength.
Therefore, when life feels unstable, do not measure the faithfulness of Jesus by the difficulty of your circumstances.
Instead, measure your circumstances against the faithfulness of Jesus.
The storm changes. Jesus does not.
You Can Trust His Character
Another reason we can trust Jesus Christ is His character.
The Lord Jesus Christ is always righteous.
He is always holy.
He is always faithful.
He cannot lie.
He does not become good one day and evil the next.
He does not change His character because circumstances become difficult.
Therefore, His faithfulness gives us a secure foundation.
When people disappoint you, Jesus remains faithful.
When plans fail, Jesus remains faithful.
When doors close, Jesus remains faithful.
When you do not understand what is happening, Jesus remains faithful.
And when you reach the end of your strength, Jesus remains faithful.
What Should You Do When Life Changes?
So, how do you respond when your world feels unstable?
1. Return to the Word
First, open your Bible.
Do not allow fear to become your primary source of information.
Instead, fill your mind with biblical truth.
Read Hebrews 13:8.
Read John 10.
Read John 14.
Read Psalm 23.
Read Isaiah 41.
Let the Word remind you who Jesus Christ is.
2. Pray Instead of Panicking
Next, pray.
You do not need impressive words.
You simply need an honest heart.
Tell the Lord Jesus Christ what troubles you.
Tell Him what you fear.
Tell Him what you do not understand.
Then surrender the situation to Him.
Prayer does not mean pretending that everything is fine.
Instead, prayer means trusting Jesus Christ even when everything is not fine.
3. Stop Building Your Peace on Circumstances
Furthermore, learn to separate your peace from your circumstances.
If your peace depends completely on having a perfect day, you will constantly struggle.
Instead, build your confidence on the unchanging Jesus Christ.
Your circumstances may rise and fall.
Your emotions may rise and fall.
But Jesus Christ remains steady.
4. Remember What He Has Already Done
Finally, remember His faithfulness.
Think about the times you thought you would not make it.
Remember the doors He opened.
Remember the strength He gave you.
Remember the prayers He answered.
Remember the times He carried you when you had no strength left.
Then allow those memories to strengthen your faith today.
A Simple Faith Exercise
Here is something you can do tonight.
Take a piece of paper.
Draw two columns.
On the left, write:
“Things That Change.”
On the right, write:
“What Never Changes About Jesus Christ.”
Under the first column, write things such as:
- My circumstances
- My emotions
- My plans
- Other people’s opinions
- My finances
- The economy
- World events
Then, under the second column, write:
- Jesus Christ is faithful.
- Jesus Christ is righteous.
- Jesus Christ is holy.
- Jesus Christ is trustworthy.
- Jesus Christ is Lord.
- Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Then read Hebrews 13:8 aloud.
This simple exercise can help you move your attention from what is changing to the One who remains unchanging.

Others will bring pain.
Some doors will open.

Some seasons will be easy.

Nevertheless, you do not have to face those changes alone.
The Lord Jesus Christ remains steady.
He remains faithful.
He remains righteous.
He remains holy.
He remains our Savior.
He remains our hope.
Therefore, when you cannot predict tomorrow, trust the One who is already there.
When you cannot understand your circumstances, trust His character.
When you cannot see the way forward, hold on to His Word.
When everything feels like shifting sand, build your faith on the Rock.
The One Thing You Can Always Count On
Perhaps today you feel tired.
Perhaps you feel disappointed.
Perhaps something in your life has changed unexpectedly.
Perhaps you are standing at a crossroads and wondering what comes next.
If that describes you, remember this:
Jesus Christ has not changed.
The same Jesus who was faithful yesterday is faithful today.
The same Jesus who carried you through previous seasons can carry you through this one.
And the same Jesus who is with you today will remain faithful tomorrow.
Therefore, do not place your ultimate hope in circumstances.
Place your hope in Jesus Christ.
Do not build your faith on human opinions.
Build your faith on the Word.
Do not allow a changing world to convince you that everything is uncertain.
There is One who remains steady.
There is One who remains unchanging.
There is One who remains faithful.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
He is not only your righteous Savior.
He is your unchanging Lord Jesus Christ, your everlasting Father, and your solid Rock.
So, when everything around you changes, hold on to Him.
When the storm rises, hold on to Him.
When your plans change, hold on to Him.
When you cannot see tomorrow, hold on to Him.
Because everything may change around you, but Jesus Christ remains steady and unchanging.

Take a moment and ask yourself:
“Am I building my faith on circumstances, or am I building my faith on the unchanging Lord Jesus Christ?”
Then take one practical step today.
Open your Bible.
Pray.
Trust.
Stand firm.
And remember:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
— Hebrews 13:8
