Passing Along the Lord Jesus Christ’s Wisdom: How Your Example Can Shape Someone’s Future

The choices we make today can influence someone’s life for years to come. Here is why passing along the Lord Jesus Christ’s wisdom matters, and how you can begin making a lasting difference through your words, actions, prayers, and daily example.

What if Your Choices Today Could Change Someone’s Tomorrow?

Have you ever wondered whether the lessons you teach your children, the advice you give a friend, or the example you set at home will make a difference years from now? Perhaps you have tried to guide someone in the right direction, only to wonder whether your words made any impact.

The truth is that faithful guidance can shape a life long after a conversation ends. As a Christian writer and the author of Deceived No More, I believe that learning and sharing biblical wisdom is essential to living faithfully and helping others follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today, we will explore Proverbs 22:6, discover how to pass along biblical wisdom, and learn practical ways to influence the next generation. Most importantly, you will discover why you should never underestimate the power of a faithful example.

1. Understand the Lasting Power of Your Example

Proverbs 22:6 teaches us:

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6, KJV

This verse reminds us that teaching children involves much more than telling them what to do. Instead, we must show them how to live.

For example, imagine a father who tells his son to speak the truth. However, the son regularly watches his father lie to avoid responsibility. Over time, the boy may learn more from his father’s behavior than from his instructions.

Now imagine a different father. He admits when he makes a mistake, apologizes when necessary, keeps his promises, and treats others with respect. His son sees honesty in action. As a result, the boy has a living example of what integrity looks like.

Our actions often reinforce—or contradict—the lessons we teach.

Therefore, whether you are a parent, grandparent, mentor, teacher, or friend, remember that someone may be learning from your example. Your everyday choices can help another person understand what it means to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Pass Along Wisdom, Not Just Rules

The book of Proverbs offers practical instruction about wisdom, discipline, honesty, humility, relationships, and the consequences of our choices.

However, biblical wisdom is not simply a list of rules. It helps us understand why certain choices lead to life and others lead to trouble.

For instance, telling a child not to lie is important. Nevertheless, helping that child understand how dishonesty damages trust provides a deeper lesson. Likewise, telling a young person to respect others is helpful, but demonstrating kindness toward people from different backgrounds makes that lesson real.

Proverbs 4:7 declares:

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7, KJV

Consequently, our goal should be to help others develop sound judgment. We want them to recognize the difference between wisdom and foolishness, even when we are not present to advise them.

How can we accomplish this? We can read Scripture together, discuss real-life situations, ask thoughtful questions, and encourage others to seek the Lord Jesus Christ before making important decisions.

In this way, we pass along more than information. We help others develop a foundation for making wise choices throughout their lives.

3. Make Biblical Wisdom Part of Everyday Life

Sometimes, we make spiritual growth seem more complicated than it needs to be. We may believe we need special teaching materials, lengthy lessons, or the perfect opportunity to share Scripture.

Yet, meaningful spiritual instruction often begins with simple habits.

Consider a mother who wants her daughter to grow in biblical wisdom. Instead of waiting for a major life event, she sets aside ten minutes each evening to read a passage from Proverbs with her daughter. After reading, they discuss what the passage teaches and how they can apply it the following day.

Over time, those conversations can create opportunities to discuss friendship, honesty, anger, responsibility, and faith.

You can begin a similar practice with your children, grandchildren, spouse, friends, or someone you mentor.

Here are four simple ways to get started:

  • Read Scripture together. Begin with one chapter of Proverbs each day, or read a few verses if time is limited.
  • Pray together. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ for wisdom, patience, and guidance in everyday decisions.
  • Talk about real situations. Use challenges at school, work, or home to discuss biblical principles.
  • Lead by example. Demonstrate forgiveness, humility, honesty, kindness, and faithfulness in your own life.

Most importantly, remain consistent. A short conversation repeated regularly can have a greater lasting influence than an occasional lecture.

4. Correct With Love and Encourage With Patience

Passing along wisdom also means helping others recognize their mistakes. However, correction requires patience, humility, and genuine care.

Suppose a teenager makes a poor decision. You could respond with anger, shame, and harsh words. Alternatively, you could explain why the decision was harmful, listen to the teenager’s concerns, and help them consider a better response next time.

The second approach does not ignore wrongdoing. Instead, it combines accountability with an opportunity to learn and grow.

Proverbs 15:1 says:

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” — Proverbs 15:1, KJV

Therefore, consider not only what you teach but also how you teach it. Your tone, attitude, and willingness to listen can influence whether someone receives your guidance.

Remember, too, that people grow at different rates. Children may need the same lesson repeated many times. Friends may struggle to change established habits. Even adults sometimes need time to understand the consequences of their choices.

For this reason, do not confuse patience with approval of harmful behavior. Instead, remain loving and truthful while encouraging responsible decisions.

5. Trust the Lord Jesus Christ With the Results

One of the greatest challenges of teaching others is that we cannot control their decisions.

You may teach your children Scripture, pray for them, and provide a faithful example. Yet, they must eventually make their own choices. Likewise, you may offer wise counsel to a friend who decides not to follow it.

Does that mean your efforts have failed? Not necessarily.

Proverbs 22:6 highlights the importance of faithful instruction, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every child will make the right choices or return to the path their parents taught them. Human decisions are real, and circumstances differ.

Nevertheless, your faithfulness still matters.

Think about a seed planted in the soil. For a time, you may see nothing happening above the ground. However, growth can begin beneath the surface before a green shoot appears.

In a similar way, a Scripture you share today may come back to someone’s mind years later. A lesson about honesty may influence a difficult decision. A memory of your kindness may encourage someone to treat another person with compassion.

You may never learn the full extent of your influence. Even so, you can continue planting seeds of biblical wisdom through your words and actions.

Galatians 6:9 encourages us:

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9, KJV

Therefore, keep teaching, keep praying, and keep living faithfully. Leave the results you cannot control in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ.

6. Start a Daily Proverbs Challenge

If you are unsure where to begin, consider a simple challenge: Read one chapter of Proverbs each day for 31 days.

The book contains 31 chapters, making it a practical starting point for developing a daily habit of biblical learning.

You can complete this challenge alone or invite someone to join you. A spouse, child, friend, or younger believer can become your reading partner.

Each day, ask three questions:

  1. What does this passage teach me about wisdom?
  2. How can I apply this lesson to my choices today?
  3. Who could benefit from the wisdom I have learned?

Then, put one lesson into practice. If you read about controlling your words, make a deliberate effort to speak kindly. If you read about honesty, choose integrity when telling the truth feels uncomfortable. If you read about humility, admit a mistake rather than defending it.

As the days pass, you will have opportunities to grow in wisdom and share what you learn.

Most importantly, let your actions reflect the lessons you discover in Scripture.

Conclusion: Your Faithfulness Can Leave a Lasting Legacy

Passing along the Lord Jesus Christ’s wisdom is not reserved for pastors, teachers, or parents. Every believer can encourage someone else through faithful living.

Your children may learn from your example. A friend may gain courage from your testimony. A younger believer may grow through your encouragement. Even an ordinary act of kindness can demonstrate the principles you have learned from Scripture.

Therefore, do not wait for the perfect moment to make a difference. Start with the people around you. Read the Bible, pray, offer wise counsel, correct with love, and demonstrate the faith you profess.

You may not see the results immediately. Nevertheless, you can remain faithful to the work of planting seeds of wisdom.

Your challenge today is simple: choose one person and one practical way to share biblical wisdom with them this week.

Remember, the choices you make today can influence someone else’s life for years to come. Keep planting, keep encouraging, and keep trusting the Lord Jesus Christ as you seek to leave a legacy of faith.

Let your life become an example that points others toward His truth.
