Closer Than You Think: How the Lord Jesus Christ Draws Near When Your Heart Is Breaking
Have You Ever Felt Completely Alone?
One phone call can change everything.
One doctor’s report can shatter your peace.
One unexpected betrayal can leave your heart in pieces.
Perhaps you trusted someone, and they walked away. Maybe you lost a loved one. Perhaps your finances collapsed, your marriage struggled, or your future suddenly looked uncertain.
As a Christian writer and Bible teacher, I have seen many people wrestle with heartbreak. Moreover, I have experienced difficult seasons myself. Therefore, I understand how quickly life can change.
Yet here is the good news.
When your heart is breaking, the Lord Jesus Christ is closer than you think.
Today, we will discover what Psalm 34:18 teaches about suffering, comfort, and hope. Additionally, we will learn practical ways to experience the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ during life’s darkest moments.
When Life Makes No Sense
Sometimes life feels unfair.
You pray, yet the answer seems delayed.
You believe, yet the pain remains.
You trust, yet the storm continues.
As a result, many people begin asking difficult questions.
“Why is this happening?”
“Has the Lord Jesus Christ forgotten me?”
“Does He even see what I am going through?”
These questions are common. In fact, many faithful believers throughout Scripture asked similar questions during seasons of suffering.
However, the Bible offers a powerful promise.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” — Psalm 34:18
This verse reminds us that the Lord Jesus Christ does not run from broken people. Instead, He moves closer to them.
David Knew What Heartbreak Felt Like
David wrote Psalm 34 from personal experience.
He was not writing from a comfortable palace.
Rather, he was writing after facing fear, danger, rejection, and uncertainty.
At different times, David was hunted, betrayed, misunderstood, and forced to flee for his life.
Nevertheless, he learned an important truth.
The presence of the Lord Jesus Christ remained with him through every trial.
Consequently, David could confidently declare that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.
His testimony reminds us that faith is not pretending everything is fine. Instead, faith is trusting the Lord Jesus Christ when everything seems broken.
What Does It Mean That the Lord Jesus Christ Is Near?
Many people expect the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ to remove every problem immediately.
However, that is not always how He works.
Sometimes He changes the situation.
Other times He changes us within the situation.
For example, imagine a child walking through a storm with a loving father. The storm may continue, but the child feels secure because the father is nearby.
Likewise, the Lord Jesus Christ walks beside us during life’s storms.
He sees your tears.
He hears your prayers.
He understands your pain.
He knows your fears.
Most importantly, He has not abandoned you.
The Holy Spirit: Your Constant Comforter
Because of the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, believers have access to His presence through the Holy Spirit.
Throughout Scripture, the Holy Spirit is described as a Comforter.
Therefore, when you feel overwhelmed, the Holy Spirit can:
- Bring peace during anxiety.
- Provide strength during weakness.
- Offer wisdom during confusion.
- Give hope during despair.
- Remind you of the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ.
This comfort is not imaginary.
Instead, it is a real gift from the Lord Jesus Christ for His people.
A Modern Example of Hope
Consider a woman who suddenly loses her job.
Initially, fear consumes her thoughts.
She worries about bills, food, and her future.
However, she begins spending time in prayer each morning. She reads Scripture daily and trusts the Lord Jesus Christ one day at a time.
Although her situation does not change overnight, something remarkable happens.
Her anxiety begins to decrease.
Her faith begins to grow.
Her peace begins to return.
Eventually, a new opportunity opens.
Looking back, she realizes that the greatest blessing was not merely the new job. Instead, it was learning that the Lord Jesus Christ was with her through every step of the journey.
Many believers have similar testimonies.
Why Trials Do Not Have the Final Word
Trials are real.
Heartbreak is real.
Loss is real.
However, they are not the end of the story.
The Lord Jesus Christ always has the final word.
Therefore, even when circumstances seem impossible, believers can remain hopeful.
The same Lord Jesus Christ who calmed storms, healed diseases, raised the dead, and conquered the grave is still working today.
Consequently, your current struggle does not define your future.
Practical Steps When Your Spirit Is Crushed
If your heart is hurting today, try these simple steps:
1. Be Honest in Prayer
First, tell the Lord Jesus Christ exactly how you feel.
He already knows your thoughts.
Therefore, speak openly and sincerely.
2. Read Psalm 34:18 Daily
Next, memorize this powerful promise.
Allow it to strengthen your faith throughout the day.
3. Spend Quiet Time in His Presence
Then, sit quietly before the Lord Jesus Christ.
Stop rushing.
Listen.
Reflect.
Receive His peace.
4. Connect with Other Believers
Finally, do not suffer alone.
Reach out to trusted Christians who can encourage and pray with you.
Personal Reflection Exercise
Right now, take a moment and answer these questions:
- What situation has broken your heart recently?
- What burden has crushed your spirit?
- What fear keeps you awake at night?
- Have you fully given that burden to the Lord Jesus Christ?
Write your answers in a journal and pray over them today.
