Reordering Our Priorities: What the Lord Jesus Christ Really Wants from Us
Have You Been So Busy Doing Religious Things That You Forgot What Matters Most?
Have you ever felt like you were doing all the right Christian things, yet something still seemed missing?
Perhaps you attend church regularly. Maybe you pray every day. You read your Bible and support your ministry. Yet deep inside, you wonder whether your faith is making a real difference in the lives of people around you.
If that question has crossed your mind, you are not alone.
As a Christian writer and Bible teacher, I have discovered that one of the greatest dangers believers face is becoming busy with religious activity while neglecting the heart of true Christianity. Today, we will explore the powerful message of Amos, uncover why the Lord Jesus Christ rebuked Israel, and learn practical ways to reorder our priorities so our faith becomes active, effective, and complete.
When Outward Religion Replaces Genuine Faith
The northern kingdom of Israel appeared successful during Amos’ time.
On the surface, everything looked good.
The people attended religious gatherings. They offered sacrifices. They observed holy days. They participated in worship services.
However, there was a serious problem.
Their hearts had drifted away from the Lord Jesus Christ.
While they continued their religious routines, they ignored the poor. They neglected justice. They exploited the weak. Many even turned toward idols for help instead of trusting the Lord.
As a result, Amos delivered a strong warning.
The Lord Jesus Christ was not impressed by their ceremonies because their actions did not match their profession of faith.
This lesson remains relevant today.
Likewise, many believers can become occupied with church activities while overlooking opportunities to love, serve, and help people who are hurting.
A Modern-Day Example
Imagine a man named David.
Every Sunday he attended church faithfully. He sang in the choir and participated in Bible studies.
One day he noticed an elderly widow living alone nearby. Her yard needed attention. Her groceries were running low. Yet David always felt too busy to help.
Months passed.
Eventually another neighbor stepped in and cared for her needs.
One evening David realized something important.
He had spent many hours talking about faith but very little time living it.
That realization changed his life.
Soon he began serving regularly. He helped neighbors, visited shut-ins, and volunteered at church outreach events.
As a result, his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ became deeper than ever before.
His faith moved from information to transformation.
True Religion Requires Compassion
James reinforces the same message that Amos preached.
James 1:27 teaches that pure religion involves caring for widows, orphans, and those experiencing hardship.
Furthermore, James 2:26 declares that faith without works is dead.
These verses do not teach that good works save us.
Instead, they reveal that genuine faith produces action.
When we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, we naturally begin loving people.
Consequently, our priorities start changing.
We become less focused on ourselves and more focused on serving others.
Signs Your Priorities May Need Reordering
Take a moment to examine your life.
You may need to reorder your priorities if:
- You spend more time criticizing than helping.
- You know Bible verses but rarely apply them.
- You pray for people but never assist when you can.
- You focus on church attendance but avoid serving.
- You care more about comfort than compassion.
- You overlook opportunities to bless others.
Thankfully, recognizing the problem is the first step toward solving it.
How to Reorder Your Priorities Today
1. Spend Time with the Lord Jesus Christ Daily
First, strengthen your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ through prayer and Bible study.
As your love for Him grows, your love for people will grow as well.
2. Look for Needs Around You
Next, pay attention to people around you.
Someone may need encouragement, food, transportation, prayer, or simply a listening ear.
Small acts of kindness often make a huge difference.
3. Get Involved in Ministry
Then, find opportunities to serve in your church or community.
You do not need a title to make an impact.
You simply need a willing heart.
4. Practice Compassion Intentionally
Finally, ask yourself each day:
“Who can I help today?”
When this becomes a habit, serving others becomes a lifestyle.
Faith Becomes Complete Through Action
The book of Amos reminds us that the Lord Jesus Christ desires more than religious activity.
He desires transformed hearts.
He wants believers who worship sincerely, love deeply, and serve faithfully.
Therefore, let us evaluate our priorities honestly.
Let us move beyond simply talking about faith.
Let us become people whose actions reflect the love of the Lord Jesus Christ every day.
As we serve others, care for those in need, and demonstrate compassion, our faith becomes visible.
Ultimately, that is what true worship looks like.
Today, choose one practical act of service. Then take that first step.
You may discover that helping someone else is exactly what the Lord Jesus Christ uses to transform your own life.
