Creating a Heart of Gratitude: Thankful Today, Strong Tomorrow
When Life Feels Heavy, Gratitude Can Change Your Perspective
Have you ever reached a point where life felt so heavy that you struggled to find anything to be thankful for?
Perhaps you were facing financial pressure. Maybe your family was going through a difficult season. Perhaps you were dealing with disappointment, loneliness, uncertainty, or a dream that seemed to be taking too long.
When life hurts, gratitude can feel difficult.
Yet, gratitude may be one of the most powerful habits you can develop.
As a Christian writer and Oneness believer, I have spent years studying Scripture and encouraging people to draw closer to the Lord Jesus Christ. Through that journey, I have learned an important truth: gratitude does not require a perfect life.
Instead, gratitude teaches us to recognize the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ even when our circumstances are not perfect.
Therefore, in this article, we will look at what the Psalms teach us about biblical gratitude, why a thankful heart matters, and how you can cultivate gratitude every day.
Most importantly, you will discover simple steps you can begin using today.
So, let’s begin.
What Is a Heart of Gratitude?
First, a heart of gratitude is more than simply saying, “Thank you.”
Gratitude involves recognizing the goodness, faithfulness, mercy, and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It changes the way we look at life.
For example, imagine waking up and immediately thinking about everything that is going wrong.
You think about the bills.
You think about yesterday’s problems.
You worry about tomorrow.
Before long, your mind becomes overwhelmed.
However, imagine beginning your morning differently.
Instead of focusing first on your problems, you say:
“Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for giving me another day. Thank You for life. Thank You for Your mercy. Thank You for Your faithfulness. Please guide me today.”
Suddenly, your problems have not disappeared.
Nevertheless, your perspective has changed.
That is the beginning of cultivating a thankful heart.
Gratitude Does Not Mean Ignoring Your Problems
Next, we need to understand something important.
Biblical gratitude does not tell us to pretend everything is wonderful.
The Psalms prove this.
The writers of the Psalms experienced joy, fear, sorrow, rejection, danger, uncertainty, and pain. Yet they repeatedly returned to praise and trust.
That lesson matters because sometimes Christians think they must be happy all the time.
They do not.
You can acknowledge your pain while still trusting the Lord Jesus Christ.
You can cry and still pray.
You can feel disappointed and still worship.
You can face uncertainty and still say, “The Lord Jesus Christ is faithful.”
Therefore, gratitude does not deny your struggle.
Instead, gratitude reminds you that your struggle is not the whole story.
The Psalms Teach Us to Remember
One reason the Psalms are so powerful is that they teach us to remember.
When life becomes difficult, we often remember our problems but forget our blessings.
We remember what we lost.
We remember what went wrong.
We remember the person who hurt us.
We remember the door that closed.
However, gratitude asks us to remember something else.
It asks us to remember what the Lord Jesus Christ has already done.
Think about your own life.
There were probably moments when you wondered how you would make it through.
Yet, somehow, you made it.
There were days when you did not have all the answers.
Still, you kept moving.
There were seasons when you felt weak.
Yet, you found strength to continue.
Therefore, take a moment and remember.
The same Lord Jesus Christ who carried you through yesterday is worthy of your trust today.
“For the Lord is good”
Psalm 100 gives us a beautiful foundation for gratitude.
The King James Version says:
“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” — Psalm 100:5
Notice the foundation of this verse.
The writer does not say that life will always be easy.
Instead, the writer points us toward the character of the Lord.
The Lord is good.
His mercy is everlasting.
His truth continues through every generation.
Therefore, our gratitude does not have to depend entirely on our circumstances.
When circumstances change, the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ remains.
When our plans change, He remains trustworthy.
When people disappoint us, His truth remains.
When tomorrow seems uncertain, His faithfulness remains.
That is why gratitude and faith belong together.
Why Gratitude Matters
Furthermore, gratitude changes what receives our attention.
If we constantly focus on what we do not have, we can become discouraged.
However, when we intentionally recognize what we have received, our perspective begins to change.
Gratitude can help us:
- Shift our attention from problems to blessings.
- Remember the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Strengthen our trust.
- Develop a more positive outlook.
- Become more aware of everyday blessings.
- Encourage other people.
- Deepen our prayer life.
- Grow in worship.
- Find strength during difficult seasons.
Most importantly, gratitude helps us remember that our circumstances do not determine the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
A Story About the Power of Gratitude
Consider a man named Michael.
Michael had worked hard for years.
He had plans for his family.
He wanted to provide a comfortable life.
Then, unexpectedly, he lost his job.
At first, Michael became angry.
Then he became afraid.
He looked at his bank account and wondered how he would pay his bills.
Every morning, he woke up thinking about what he had lost.
One morning, however, Michael decided to change his routine.
Before looking at his phone, he prayed.
“Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for giving me another day. I don’t understand everything happening right now, but I trust You. Thank You for my family. Thank You for life. Thank You for Your mercy. Please lead me.”
His circumstances did not immediately change.
The job did not suddenly appear.
The bills did not disappear.
Nevertheless, something inside Michael began to change.
His fear no longer controlled every thought.
He became more hopeful.
He started applying for jobs with renewed confidence.
He became more patient with his family.
He also began noticing blessings he had previously ignored.
Eventually, a new opportunity came.
However, Michael later said that the greatest blessing was not simply getting another job.
The greatest blessing was learning to trust the Lord Jesus Christ during the waiting season.
That is the power of a heart of gratitude.
Gratitude Begins With Who the Lord Jesus Christ Is
So, how do we cultivate gratitude?
First, begin with who the Lord Jesus Christ is.
Do not begin with what you have.
Begin with Him.
Thank Him because He is faithful.
Thank Him because He is merciful.
Thank Him because He is loving.
Thank Him because He is trustworthy.
Thank Him because His truth does not change.
When we begin there, gratitude becomes deeper than simply being thankful for possessions.
We become thankful for the One who gives us life and sustains us.
Step One: Thank Him for Who He Is
First, spend time thanking the Lord Jesus Christ for His character.
You might pray:
“Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for being faithful. Thank You for Your mercy. Thank You for Your love. Thank You for Your patience with me. Thank You for Your truth. Help me trust You more each day.”
Then, pause.
Do not rush.
Think about the words you are praying.
Gratitude grows when we intentionally recognize who the Lord Jesus Christ is.
Step Two: Thank Him for What He Has Done
Next, remember what the Lord Jesus Christ has already done.
Think about your family.
Think about answered prayers.
Think about protection.
Think about opportunities.
Think about lessons learned.
Think about doors that opened.
Also, think about difficult situations that you survived.
Some blessings may seem small.
However, small blessings still matter.
A meal can be a blessing.
A phone call from someone you love can be a blessing.
A peaceful moment can be a blessing.
A new morning can be a blessing.
Therefore, do not overlook the ordinary.
Sometimes the ordinary things are extraordinary gifts.
Step Three: Thank Him for What He Will Do
Finally, thank the Lord Jesus Christ for what lies ahead.
This step requires faith.
You may not know what tomorrow will bring.
However, you can know who holds tomorrow.
You can say:
“Lord Jesus Christ, I do not know everything that will happen tomorrow, but I trust You. Lead me. Give me wisdom. Give me strength. Help me walk according to Your will.”
That kind of prayer develops trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
It also teaches us to look forward with faith instead of fear.
Gratitude in Difficult Seasons
Perhaps you are reading this while going through a difficult season.
If so, I want to encourage you.
You do not have to manufacture fake happiness.
Instead, find one thing to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for today.
Just one.
Maybe you are thankful for another breath.
Maybe you are thankful for your children.
Maybe you are thankful for a friend.
Maybe you are thankful for a place to sleep.
Maybe you are thankful that you can still pray.
Start there.
Then tomorrow, find another reason.
Over time, those small moments of gratitude can become a powerful spiritual habit.

Now, let’s put gratitude into action.
Take five minutes today.
Get a piece of paper or open your journal.
Write down five things you are thankful for.
Do not overthink it.
Write the first five things that come to mind.
Then, thank the Lord Jesus Christ for each one.
Afterward, choose one person and tell them that you appreciate them.
Why?
Because gratitude should not remain inside our hearts.
Gratitude should become an action.
A Heart of Gratitude Can Change Your Tomorrow
Finally, remember this:
You cannot always control what happens around you.
You cannot control every decision other people make.
You cannot control every circumstance.
You cannot control every disappointment.
However, you can choose where you direct your attention.
You can choose to remember.
You can choose to pray.
You can choose to worship.
You can choose to give thanks.
Most importantly, you can choose to trust the Lord Jesus Christ.
A heart of gratitude does not mean you will never experience pain.
Instead, it means pain does not have the final word.
Gratitude reminds you that the Lord Jesus Christ is still faithful.
Therefore, when tomorrow comes, remember what you learned today.
Thank Him for who He is.
Thank Him for what He has done.
Thank Him for what He will continue to do.
Then keep walking.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting.
Keep believing.
Keep giving thanks.
Final Encouragement
Perhaps today has been difficult.
Perhaps you have more questions than answers.
Perhaps you are waiting for a breakthrough.
Perhaps you are carrying a burden that nobody else knows about.
If so, pause for a moment.
Take a breath.
Then say:
“Thank You, Lord Jesus Christ.”
You may not have everything you want.
Still, you have reasons to be thankful.
You may not understand everything.
Still, you can trust Him.
You may not know what tomorrow holds.
Still, you can place tomorrow in His hands.
So, cultivate a heart of gratitude.
Build a habit of daily gratitude.
Strengthen your gratitude and faith.
And remember the words of Psalm 100:5:
“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
Because the Lord is good, we have a reason to give thanks.
Because His mercy is everlasting, we have a reason to hope.
Because His truth endures, we have a reason to trust.
And because the Lord Jesus Christ remains faithful, we can face tomorrow with a thankful heart and renewed strength.
