Clothe Yourself in What Matters: Becoming More Like the Lord Jesus Christ Every Day
What Are You Wearing Today?
Have you ever looked in the mirror before leaving home and wondered if you looked presentable? Most people spend time choosing clothes because they know appearance matters. Yet many believers forget something far more important—the spiritual clothing they wear every day.
Perhaps you have struggled with anger that seems impossible to control. Maybe harsh words leave your mouth before you even think. Perhaps bitterness has settled into your heart because someone deeply hurt you. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.
The good news is that the Lord Jesus Christ never asks us to change ourselves through our own strength. Instead, He gives us a new life and teaches us how to live it. Today, we will discover what it means to clothe yourself in Christ, why it matters, and how you can begin living with compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and forgiveness every single day.
If you stay with me, you will learn practical steps you can begin using today to become more like the Lord Jesus Christ and experience the peace that comes from genuine spiritual transformation.
Our Spiritual Wardrobe Matters
Every morning we choose what clothes to wear. Likewise, every day we also choose attitudes that shape our actions.
The Apostle Paul reminds believers:
“Put on therefore, as the elect of the Lord Jesus Christ, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.” (Colossians 3:12)
Notice that Paul says “put on.” This is an intentional action.
The Lord Jesus Christ has already given us a new identity. However, we must choose daily to wear attitudes that match that identity.
Think of it this way.
A police officer wears a uniform because it reflects the authority of the position. Likewise, believers should wear compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness because these qualities reflect the character of the Lord Jesus Christ.
A Story That Many Can Relate To
Imagine David arriving at work every morning.
He carries the weight of stress, unpaid bills, and family problems. Before long, someone makes a small mistake. David immediately lashes out with sarcasm.
His coworkers begin avoiding him.
One evening, David reads Colossians 3:12. He realizes he has been wearing anger instead of compassion.
The next day, he chooses a different response.
Instead of criticizing a coworker, he offers encouragement.
Instead of speaking harshly, he listens.
Instead of keeping score, he forgives.
Nothing changes overnight. Yet little by little, people begin noticing something different.
Eventually, one coworker asks, “What happened to you?”
That simple question opens the door for David to share how the Lord Jesus Christ is changing his life.
That is exactly how Christian character becomes a powerful witness.
Replace Old Habits With New Ones
Many people try to stop sinning without replacing sinful habits.
That rarely works.
The Bible teaches us to replace wrong actions with Christlike ones.
For example:
- If you speak with sarcasm, intentionally speak words that encourage others.
- If you tend to be impatient, slow down and listen before answering.
- If you are proud, practice humility by serving someone without expecting recognition.
- If you are holding a grudge, choose forgiveness because the Lord Jesus Christ first forgave you.
- If you are critical, begin looking for reasons to praise others instead.
Each small decision helps you clothe yourself in Christ and strengthens your Christian character.
Grow Spiritually Every Day
Character does not grow by accident.
Instead, spiritual growth happens through daily choices.
Consider adding these habits to your routine:
- Read Scripture every day.
- Memorize Bible verses that address your struggles.
- Pray before making important decisions.
- Spend time with believers who encourage spiritual growth.
- Serve people in your church and community.
- Worship the Lord Jesus Christ with gratitude.
- Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to reveal areas that still need change.
These habits gradually shape your heart.
Eventually, compassion becomes natural.
Patience becomes easier.
Kindness becomes your first response instead of your last.
Love Is the Greatest Evidence
The Apostle John writes:
“If a man say, I love the Lord Jesus Christ, and hateth his brother, he is a liar…” (See 1 John 4:20.)
Our love for the Lord Jesus Christ should always overflow into love for others.
Likewise, 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 teaches that love:
- Is patient.
- Is kind.
- Does not envy.
- Is not proud.
- Keeps no record of wrongs.
- Never gives up.
- Always hopes.
- Endures every circumstance.
These qualities perfectly describe the character the Lord Jesus Christ wants to develop within every believer.
The Lord Jesus Christ Makes Real Change Possible
Many people become discouraged because they try harder instead of surrendering deeper.
Real transformation begins when we receive the new life that the Lord Jesus Christ freely gives.
Because He first loved us, we can love others.
Because He forgave us, we can forgive others.
Because He showed mercy, we can extend mercy.
Because He humbled Himself, we can choose humility.
This is not behavior modification.
It is heart transformation.
Practical Challenge for Today
Take a few quiet moments today.
Ask yourself:
- What attitude am I wearing?
- What sinful habit keeps defeating me?
- Which Christlike quality should I intentionally put on today?
Then make a simple plan.
Replace one negative habit with one biblical action.
Repeat that choice tomorrow.
Soon you will begin seeing the Lord Jesus Christ shaping your life from the inside out.

Reflection
The Lord Jesus Christ did not save us merely to change where we spend eternity. He saved us to change who we become today.
Every act of kindness reflects His heart.
Every moment of forgiveness reveals His grace.
Every act of humility points people toward Him.
Therefore, make the choice each morning to clothe yourself in Christ. As you do, your family, your friends, your coworkers, and even strangers will begin to see less of your old nature and more of the Lord Jesus Christ living through you.
That is the kind of life that changes homes, churches, communities, and ultimately the world.
