The Foundation of Faith: Obedience to the Gospel

In the days of John the Baptist, who introduced baptism to Israel, the Lord Jesus addressed a group of religious leaders with a sobering rebuke. He declared that they would travel far and wide to make a single disciple, only to turn that person into someone even more misguided than themselves. This warning still echoes today, challenging us to examine not just what we teach, but how faithfully we follow the truth.

The Command of the Lord Jesus

The Lord Jesus gave His disciples a clear and uncompromising mission. As recorded in Mark 16:16, He commanded them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The message was simple yet powerful: those who believe and are baptized will be saved, and those who do not believe will be condemned.

This instruction became the foundation upon which the early church was built. The disciples understood that their role was not only to preach but also to establish a pattern for future generations. Though they were mortal men who would eventually pass away, the truth they delivered would remain as a guiding light for all who seek salvation.

Empowered by the Holy Ghost

Before beginning their mission, the Lord Jesus instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received the Holy Ghost. This divine empowerment would open their understanding and equip them to carry out His commands with clarity and authority.

He also appointed leadership among them. Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, with the authority that what he bound on earth would be bound in heaven, and what he loosed on earth would be loosed in heaven. This was not a small responsibility—it was the establishment of the pathway into the Kingdom.

The Message in Action: Acts 2

When we turn to Acts chapter 2, we see these instructions come to life. On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood and preached with boldness. In Acts 2:38–42, he declared that those who believed should repent and be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and they would receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The response was immediate and powerful. Many gladly received the message and were baptized. This was not a suggestion—it was the clear and demonstrated entry point into the Kingdom of Heaven.

A Call to Return to Biblical Truth

Despite this clear example, many today resist or reinterpret these foundational teachings. Some claim that baptism is not essential for salvation, even though Scripture plainly states that “baptism does now save us.” This contradiction raises serious concerns about obedience and truth.

The issue is not about judging individuals but about aligning actions with Scripture. When people reject what is clearly written and practiced by the early church, they risk becoming like the “blind leading the blind,” as described in Scripture—both heading toward destruction.

The Danger of Disobedience

It is possible to appear outwardly righteous while being inwardly disconnected from truth. The Lord Jesus warned of those who look clean on the outside but are filled with corruption within. Disobedience, when disguised as righteousness, becomes even more dangerous.

Baptism is described as the answer of a good conscience toward the Lord Jesus. To reject it while claiming obedience creates a contradiction that cannot be ignored. True faith is not only belief—it is action aligned with divine instruction.

Unity Through Obedience

The early church was united in both doctrine and practice. They preached the same message and followed the same pattern. Today, there is a call for that same unity—not through compromise, but through obedience to the Word.

There is no justification for ignoring what has already been clearly established. The Lord Jesus is a Lord of order and truth, and His instructions are not optional. Even what may seem like a small act of disobedience can have eternal consequences.

A Sobering Reality

Scripture warns that at the final judgment, many will be shocked to discover that they are not recognized as righteous. These are individuals who knew the truth but chose not to follow it fully. This is not meant to instill fear, but to awaken responsibility.

The Lord Jesus cannot be mocked. If we desire to be accepted, we must also be obedient. Belief without obedience is incomplete.

A Final Call

This is a call to return to the foundation laid by the apostles. Acts 2:38 clearly outlines what to do to receive remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost. The message has not changed, and neither should our response.

Let us stop deceiving ourselves. Let us embrace truth with humility and act upon it with conviction. The path has already been shown, we must simply choose to walk in it.
