Walking Through Trials: How to Trust Jesus Christ When Life Gets Difficult
Christian Inspiration | Faith | Perseverance | Spiritual Growth

When Life Becomes Difficult, Where Do You Turn?
Have you ever experienced a season when nothing seemed to go right? Perhaps you prayed, but the situation did not change. Maybe you trusted the Lord Jesus Christ, yet you still faced disappointment, sickness, financial struggles, broken relationships, or unexpected loss. You may even have wondered whether He had forgotten you.
However, difficult seasons do not mean that your faith has failed. Nor do they mean that the Lord Jesus Christ has abandoned you.
As a Christian writer who desires to encourage people to live by the Word of the Lord, I want to remind you of an important truth: You can experience a difficult season without losing your confidence in Jesus Christ.
Today, we will explore what the Bible teaches about walking through trials, why the Lord allows us to experience difficult seasons, and how we can remain faithful when life becomes challenging.
Most importantly, you will discover that trials do not have to destroy your faith. Instead, as you trust Jesus Christ, they can become opportunities for spiritual growth, stronger character, and deeper dependence on Him.
So, if you are walking through a difficult season right now, this message is for you.
1. Understand That Trials Are Part of the Christian Journey
First, let’s address a common misconception. Nowhere in Scripture does the Lord promise that Christians will enjoy a perfect life without trouble.
Unfortunately, some people believe that becoming a Christian means that every problem will disappear. They expect financial success, perfect health, peaceful relationships, and a life free from disappointment.
However, the Bible teaches something different.
Jesus told His disciples:
John 16:33 (KJV)
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
Notice that Jesus did not say we might experience trouble. He said that we shall have tribulation.
Nevertheless, He also gave us a wonderful promise. We can have peace because He has overcome the world.
Therefore, Christianity does not mean escaping every difficulty. It means having Jesus Christ with us as we face life’s difficulties.
Consider a family that suddenly experiences financial hardship. The bills continue to arrive, unexpected expenses appear, and the future becomes uncertain.
Although the family may feel overwhelmed, they can still pray, trust the promises of Jesus, seek wise advice, and take responsible steps toward recovery.
Their circumstances may not change overnight. Nevertheless, their faith can remain strong.
Remember: A difficult season does not cancel the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ. Even when life becomes uncertain, He remains faithful.
2. Allow Your Trials to Strengthen Your Faith
Next, we must understand that trials can develop qualities in our lives that comfort and convenience cannot easily teach.
James wrote to believers who were experiencing different forms of hardship. He encouraged them to look beyond their immediate suffering and recognize the spiritual value of perseverance.
James 1:2–4 (KJV)
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
James was not telling believers to enjoy pain or pretend that suffering does not hurt.
Instead, he was teaching them to recognize what the Lord can accomplish through their perseverance.
For example, imagine a person who has always depended on personal strength. Whenever a problem appears, that person immediately tries to solve everything alone.
However, a difficult season may reveal the limits of human strength. As a result, that person begins to pray more, study Scripture more carefully, and depend more fully on Jesus Christ.
Eventually, the person develops a stronger prayer life and a deeper understanding of the importance of trusting the Lord.
That is one way trials can produce spiritual growth.
Therefore, do not measure your progress only by how quickly your problems disappear. Sometimes, your greatest spiritual progress happens while you are still waiting for an answer.
3. Persevere Because There Is a Promise Beyond Your Pain
Furthermore, the Bible teaches that perseverance matters.
James gives us this powerful encouragement:
James 1:12 (KJV)
“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
What a beautiful promise!
Notice that James connects perseverance with a future reward. The Christian journey does not end with the struggles we experience in this present world.
We have a wonderful hope in Jesus Christ.
Sometimes, we want immediate answers. We want the financial breakthrough today, the healing today, the restored relationship today, and the solution to every problem right now.
However, the Lord does not promise that every earthly situation will turn out exactly as we desire.
Some prayers receive answers we can see. Others require patience. Some difficulties remain with us until our earthly journey ends.
Nevertheless, our eternal hope remains secure in Jesus Christ.
Consider someone who has spent years caring for a loved one. The responsibility is exhausting. There are sleepless nights, emotional struggles, and moments of discouragement.
Yet that person continues to serve with love and faithfulness.
Although others may never understand the sacrifice, the Lord sees every act of faithfulness.
Therefore, keep going. Your present circumstances are not the final chapter of your story.

4. Remember That Jesus Christ Will Never Abandon You
Perhaps the most painful part of a difficult season is feeling alone.
You may have people around you, yet still feel that nobody understands what you are experiencing. You may smile in public while silently struggling with fear, sadness, and uncertainty.
However, the Word of the Lord provides wonderful reassurance.
Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
“For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
What an encouraging promise!
The Lord Jesus Christ does not abandon His people when difficulties arise. His presence is not limited to the days when everything goes well.
He is with us during the difficult moments, too.
Consider the three Hebrew young men who refused to bow before Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image. Their decision placed them in a fiery furnace.
Yet they were not alone.
Daniel 3:25 (KJV)
“He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
Their experience reminds us that the presence of the Lord is greater than the power of the fire.
Likewise, your difficult season does not place you beyond the reach of Jesus Christ.
You may not understand everything happening around you. Nevertheless, you can hold on to His promises.
When you cannot see a way forward, remember that you are never beyond the reach of the One who promised never to forsake you.
5. Trust the Lord Even When You Cannot See What He Is Doing
Another challenge we face during trials is uncertainty.
We want explanations. We want to know why something happened, how long it will last, and what will happen next.
Unfortunately, life does not always provide immediate answers.
However, faith teaches us to trust the Lord even when we cannot see the entire picture.
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Notice that this passage does not tell us to trust only when everything makes sense.
It tells us to trust with all our hearts.
For example, imagine losing a job after years of faithful service. At first, disappointment and fear may take control of your thoughts.
You may wonder how you will provide for your family. You may question what went wrong or whether another opportunity will come.
Nevertheless, you can choose to trust Jesus Christ while taking practical steps forward.
Update your résumé. Explore new opportunities. Seek wise counsel. Pray for direction. Continue to believe that your life is in His hands.
Faith does not mean refusing to act. Rather, faith means taking the next responsible step while trusting the Lord with the outcome.
Therefore, do not allow uncertainty to steal your confidence in Jesus Christ.
6. Let Your Trials Produce Spiritual Growth
Sometimes, when we look back at difficult seasons, we recognize lessons we could not see while experiencing them.
A painful disappointment may have taught us patience. A broken relationship may have taught us the importance of forgiveness. A financial struggle may have taught us better stewardship. A season of waiting may have taught us to depend less on ourselves and more on Jesus Christ.
Paul explains this process in Romans.
Romans 5:3–5 (KJV)
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
These verses show a progression:
- Tribulation develops patience.
- Patience develops experience.
- Experience strengthens hope.
- Hope reminds us of the love of the Lord.
Of course, suffering does not automatically make everyone stronger. Some people become discouraged, bitter, or fearful.
That is why we must bring our pain to Jesus Christ and allow His Word to guide our response.
For instance, two people may experience the same disappointment. One may allow resentment to take control. The other may seek the Lord, learn from the experience, and move forward with greater wisdom.
The difference is not necessarily the trial itself. It is how each person responds.
Consequently, ask yourself what the Lord is teaching you during this season. Let your difficulties draw you closer to Him rather than push you away.
7. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus, Not Just Your Circumstances
Finally, one of the most important lessons about walking through trials is learning where to focus your attention.
When problems become overwhelming, it is easy to think about nothing else.
You wake up thinking about the problem. You spend the day worrying about it. You go to bed wondering how you will solve it.
Before long, your circumstances begin to control your thoughts and emotions.
However, Scripture gives us another direction.
Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Jesus endured suffering and completed His mission.
Therefore, we must learn to keep our eyes on Him.
This does not mean ignoring our problems. It means refusing to allow our problems to become greater in our minds than the One who holds our future.
When fear rises, remember His promises.
When discouragement comes, spend time in prayer.
When your strength feels weak, read the Scriptures.
When you feel alone, remind yourself that Jesus promised never to forsake you.
Above all, remember that your relationship with Jesus Christ is more valuable than any temporary comfort this world can offer.
Keep looking to Jesus. He is your source of strength, your peace, and your eternal hope.

Practical Ways to Walk Through Trials With Faith
So, what can you do when you find yourself in a difficult season?
Here are seven practical steps you can begin using today.
- Pray honestly: Tell the Lord exactly how you feel. You do not have to hide your fears or disappointments.
- Read the Bible daily: Fill your mind with the promises and teachings of Jesus Christ.
- Remember past victories: Think about previous difficulties and how the Lord helped you through them.
- Stay connected to faithful believers: Seek encouragement, prayer, and wise Christian counsel.
- Take responsible action: Do what you can today instead of becoming paralyzed by what you cannot control.
- Practice gratitude: Thank the Lord for His mercy, protection, provision, and faithfulness, even during difficult times.
- Keep your eternal hope: Remember that your final destination is with Jesus Christ, and your present struggle is not the end of your story.
Most importantly, do not give up simply because the road has become difficult.
A Prayer for Those Walking Through Trials
Dear Lord Jesus Christ,
Thank You for Your faithfulness and unfailing love. Thank You for promising never to leave me or forsake me.
Today, I bring my struggles, fears, disappointments, and uncertainties before You. You know what I am facing, even when I cannot find the words to explain it.
Please strengthen my faith. Give me patience when I must wait, wisdom when I must make decisions, and courage when I feel afraid.
Help me to trust You when I cannot understand what is happening. Keep my heart from bitterness, my mind from discouragement, and my spirit from giving up.
Teach me to grow through difficult experiences. Help me become more loving, patient, humble, and faithful.
Above all, remind me that I am never alone because You are always faithful to Your promises.
I place my life, my family, and my future in Your hands.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray.
Amen.
Conclusion: Your Trial Is Not the End of Your Story
As we conclude, remember that walking through trials is part of the Christian journey.
You may not understand why certain things happen. You may not know how long your difficult season will last. You may even feel discouraged because your prayers have not received the answers you expected.
Nevertheless, do not lose your faith.
The Lord Jesus Christ remains faithful. His promises remain true. His love does not disappear when trouble arrives.
Remember the words of James 1:12. There is a promised crown of life for those who love the Lord and endure faithfully.
Therefore, keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. Keep walking with Jesus Christ.
One day, you may look back and recognize how much you learned, how your faith developed, and how the Lord sustained you through moments you once thought you could not survive.
And even when you cannot see the purpose of your present struggle, you can still trust the One who holds your future.
You may be walking through a storm today, but you do not have to walk through it alone. Keep your eyes on Jesus Christ. He is faithful, yesterday, today, and forever.
A Moment of Reflection
Take a moment to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for His faithfulness.
Think about a difficult season you have already survived. What did that experience teach you? How did your faith change? What promises helped you keep going?
Then, if you are facing a trial today, surrender your concerns to Him and take the next step in faith.
Your circumstances may change, but the faithfulness of Jesus Christ never changes.
