Following the Way of Jesus: The Daily Journey of True Discipleship

What If You Think You’re Following Jesus, but You’re Really Following Yourself?

Many people call themselves Christians. Yet many struggle with fear, disappointment, confusion, and spiritual weakness. They attend church, read the Bible, and pray occasionally. However, they still wonder why they feel distant from the lord Jesus Christ.

Perhaps you have asked yourself these questions.

“Am I really following Jesus?”

“Why is my spiritual life not growing?”

“What does true discipleship actually look like?”

If those questions sound familiar, you are not alone.

For many years, I have studied Scripture and shared biblical truth to help believers grow deeper in their relationship with the lord Jesus Christ. Today, we will discover what Jesus Himself taught about following Him. More importantly, you will learn practical ways to become a true disciple every single day.

By the end of this article, you will understand why following the way of Jesus is not merely attending church. Instead, it is a lifelong commitment that transforms every part of your life.

What Does It Mean to Follow the Way of Jesus?

At its heart, following the way of Jesus means becoming His disciple.

A disciple is more than a student. A disciple learns from the Master and then lives like the Master.

Jesus never invited people to admire Him from a distance. Instead, He called ordinary people to leave their old lives behind and walk with Him every day.

His invitation still stands today.

Following Jesus means allowing Him to shape your thoughts, your words, your priorities, your relationships, and your future.

It is not simply believing facts about Jesus.

It is becoming like Him.

Jesus Begins with One Difficult Command

Jesus made discipleship very clear.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” — Matthew 16:24 (KJV)

Many people love the promise.

Fewer people embrace the process.

The first step is not success.

It is not comfort.

It is self-denial.

What Does It Mean to Deny Yourself?

At first, denying yourself sounds negative.

Actually, it is one of the greatest acts of freedom.

Self-denial means choosing the will of the lord Jesus Christ above your own desires.

It means saying:

“Jesus, Your plan is better than mine.”

This requires humility.

After all, our human nature often believes we know what is best.

Yet experience teaches us otherwise.

Many painful mistakes begin with one simple thought:

“I’ll do it my way.”

True discipleship begins when we surrender our own way.

A Story We Can All Understand

Imagine a traveler driving through unfamiliar mountains.

His GPS warns him that the road ahead is closed.

Instead of listening, he decides he knows a better route.

A few miles later, he reaches a dead end.

Now he has wasted time, fuel, and energy.

Life often works the same way.

The lord Jesus Christ already knows the destination.

He knows every danger ahead.

When we ignore His direction, we often create unnecessary pain.

However, when we trust Him, He leads us safely.

That is why following the way of Jesus always leads us toward life.

Discipleship Is a Daily Lifestyle

Many people treat discipleship like an occasional event.

They follow Jesus on Sunday.

Then they follow themselves the rest of the week.

Jesus never taught that kind of faith.

Instead, He calls us every day.

Every morning becomes another opportunity to choose Him again.

Some days feel easy.

Other days become difficult.

Nevertheless, discipleship continues because love remains faithful.

Every prayer, every act of obedience, every kind word, and every sacrifice shapes us into the image of Christ.

Little by little, we become more like Him.

Taking Up Your Cross

The cross was never a symbol of comfort.

It represented sacrifice.

Jesus willingly carried His cross because He loved us.

Likewise, we also carry our cross.

This may include:

  • Forgiving someone who hurt you.
  • Refusing temptation.
  • Standing for biblical truth.
  • Remaining honest when lying seems easier.
  • Loving difficult people.
  • Choosing holiness over popularity.

These choices are rarely easy.

Still, they reveal the character of Christ in us.

Why Following Jesus Sometimes Hurts

Many people expect the Christian life to remove every hardship.

Jesus promised something different.

He promised His presence during hardship.

When we follow Him, we may face rejection.

Friends may misunderstand us.

Family members may criticize our faith.

Others may mock biblical convictions.

Even so, every trial strengthens genuine faith.

Just as gold becomes purer through fire, faithful believers grow stronger through testing.

Therefore, suffering for righteousness is never wasted.

It becomes a testimony that points others to the lord Jesus Christ.

The Beautiful Paradox of Following Jesus

Jesus revealed one of the greatest mysteries of life.

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” — Matthew 16:25 (KJV)

This seems backwards.

Yet it is completely true.

When we chase wealth, pleasure, or selfish ambition above everything else, we eventually discover emptiness.

However, when we surrender our lives to the lord Jesus Christ, we discover lasting peace, purpose, joy, and eternal life.

The world says, “Take.”

Jesus says, “Give.”

The world says, “Serve yourself.”

Jesus says, “Serve others.”

The world says, “Follow your heart.”

Jesus says, “Follow Me.”

Only one path leads to everlasting life.

Practical Ways to Follow Jesus Every Day

Following the way of Jesus becomes easier when we develop daily habits.

Start with these simple practices:

  • Begin each morning with prayer.
  • Read Scripture every day.
  • Obey what you learn immediately.
  • Speak with kindness.
  • Forgive quickly.
  • Serve others without expecting recognition.
  • Share your faith.
  • Worship even during difficult seasons.
  • Stay connected with faithful believers.
  • End each day by thanking the lord Jesus Christ.

These small habits create lifelong transformation.

Take a Personal Inventory

Pause for a moment.

Ask yourself these questions honestly.

  • Am I following Jesus or following my own desires?
  • Do I obey Scripture even when it is difficult?
  • Have I truly denied myself?
  • Am I becoming more like Jesus?
  • Can others see Christ through my actions?

Honest reflection leads to lasting growth.
