Have You Ever Walked Past Someone in Need?

Imagine driving home after a long day. You stop at a traffic light. Suddenly, you notice someone standing on the corner holding a sign that reads, “Anything Helps.”

Immediately, your heart begins to wrestle with your mind.

Should you help?

What if they misuse the money?

Can one person really make a difference?

Many believers ask these same questions every day. Yet the Bible gives us clear direction. As someone who studies and teaches the Scriptures, I want to show you what the Bible says about honoring the poor and why this message matters more than ever. By the end of this article, you will understand why serving those in need is actually serving the Lord Jesus Christ, discover practical ways to help, and learn how your compassion can change lives, including your own.

The Lord Jesus Christ Cares Deeply About the Poor

Throughout Scripture, we see the heart of the Lord Jesus Christ for people who suffer.

Some people struggle because they were born into poverty. Others have lost jobs, experienced illness, or faced unexpected tragedy. Still others are poor in spirit. They carry emotional pain, loneliness, guilt, or hopelessness.

The Lord Jesus Christ sees every one of them.

King Solomon wrote these powerful words:

“If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord—and he will repay you!”

Proverbs 19:17 (NLT)

What an amazing promise!

When we help someone in need, the Lord Jesus Christ considers it a personal act of love toward Him.

That changes everything.

Helping the poor is not simply charity. Instead, it becomes an act of worship.

Poverty Is More Than a Lack of Money

Many people think poverty only means lacking food or money.

However, the Bible reveals another kind of poverty.

In Matthew 5, Jesus spoke about those who are “poor in spirit.”

These are people who recognize their need for Him.

Likewise, many people appear successful on the outside while feeling completely empty inside. They have careers, homes, and financial security, yet they still search for peace.

Meanwhile, others struggle with depression, addiction, grief, or loneliness.

Both groups need compassion.

As followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we must learn to recognize both physical and spiritual needs.

A Story of One Small Act of Kindness

Several years ago, a church member noticed an elderly widow sitting alone every Sunday.

She never asked for help.

She always smiled.

However, one family decided to visit her after church.

They discovered her refrigerator was nearly empty.

Her home needed repairs.

More importantly, she desperately needed friendship.

Week after week, they brought groceries, prayed with her, and spent time talking.

Eventually, other church members joined them.

Months later, the woman said something unforgettable:

“I thought everyone had forgotten me, but the Lord Jesus Christ sent you.”

That family did not become wealthy.

They simply became available.

Their kindness reflected the love of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus Identifies Himself with the Poor

One of the most powerful teachings about helping the poor appears in Matthew 25.

Jesus said that when we feed the hungry, welcome strangers, clothe those without clothing, visit the sick, or care for prisoners, we are doing those things for Him.

Matthew 25:40 says:

“…when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.”

What an incredible truth.

Every act of compassion becomes an act of service to the Lord Jesus Christ.

That means no act of kindness is ever wasted.

Every meal matters.

Every visit matters.

Every encouraging word matters.

Every prayer matters.

Why Some People Ignore the Poor

Sadly, many people become too busy to notice suffering.

Others fear being taken advantage of.

Still others believe someone else will help.

Yet compassion always requires action.

Certainly, wisdom should guide our giving.

Nevertheless, wisdom should never become an excuse for doing nothing.

Remember this simple truth:

No one can do everything.

However, everyone can do something.

Practical Ways to Honor the Poor

Thankfully, honoring the poor does not always require large amounts of money.

You can begin today.

Here are a few practical ideas:

  • Donate food to local food banks.
  • Support Christian ministries that care for struggling families.
  • Visit elderly people who feel forgotten.
  • Encourage someone battling loneliness.
  • Volunteer at a homeless shelter.
  • Help someone find employment.
  • Pray faithfully for those facing hardship.
  • Share the hope found in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Small acts performed with genuine love often produce eternal results.

The Blessing of Christian Generosity

Many people believe giving always leaves them with less.

The Bible teaches the opposite.

Generosity changes both the giver and the receiver.

Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that the Lord Jesus Christ rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Likewise, Proverbs 19:17 teaches that helping the poor is like lending to the Lord.

Imagine that.

The Creator notices every act of compassion.

Nothing escapes His attention.

Compassion Reveals Genuine Faith

The Apostle John asked an important question.

“If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?”

1 John 3:17 (NLT)

These words challenge every believer.

Real faith produces real compassion.

Our love should not remain inside our hearts.

Instead, it should become visible through our actions.

People should see the love of the Lord Jesus Christ through the way we treat others.

One Day Everything Will Be Made Right

Today’s world still struggles with hunger, injustice, sickness, and poverty.

Sometimes these problems seem overwhelming.

Thankfully, our hope does not rest in human governments or organizations.

Our hope rests completely in the Lord Jesus Christ.

One day He will establish perfect righteousness.

He will wipe away every tear.

He will end suffering forever.

Until that glorious day arrives, we continue serving Him by serving others.

Every opportunity to help someone is another opportunity to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your Mission Starts Today

You may not be able to change the entire world.

However, you can change someone’s world today.

Perhaps your kindness will restore someone’s hope.

Perhaps your generosity will answer someone’s prayer.

Perhaps your compassion will introduce someone to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Never underestimate what one faithful act of love can accomplish.

The Lord Jesus Christ sees every sacrifice.

He remembers every act of compassion.

And He promises that your labor in Him is never in vain.
