Our Most Important Work: Why Love Is the Greatest Evidence of Following Jesus
Have You Become Too Busy to Love?
What if the greatest thing the Lord Jesus Christ wants from you is not more knowledge, more activity, or even more church attendance?
What if it is love?
Many believers spend years studying Scripture, serving in ministry, and attending worship services. Yet, despite all those good things, some struggle with broken relationships, bitterness, and unforgiveness. As a Christian writer and teacher, I have noticed that many sincere followers of the Lord Jesus Christ want deeper faith but often overlook the very thing Jesus called most important.
Today, we will discover why Christian love is our most important work, why forgiveness in Christianity is essential, and how we can become people who reflect the love of the Lord Jesus Christ every day.
Most importantly, we will learn practical ways to love others more deeply and experience stronger relationships.
Love Is the Greatest Commandment
First, let’s examine what the Lord Jesus Christ taught.
In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest. His answer was clear. We must love the Lord Jesus Christ with all our heart, soul, and mind. Then, we must love our neighbors as ourselves.
Notice that Jesus did not say the greatest commandment was gaining knowledge, building wealth, or achieving success. Instead, He pointed directly to love.
Therefore, if we want to know what truly matters, we should start where Jesus started.
Love is not merely an emotion. Rather, it is a daily decision. It is choosing kindness when others are difficult. It is showing patience when people disappoint us. It is offering grace when someone makes a mistake.
As a result, biblical love becomes visible through our actions.
How Will People Recognize a True Disciple?
Next, consider the powerful words of Jesus in John 13:35:
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
This statement should challenge every believer.
Jesus did not say people would recognize His followers by their church buildings.
Likewise, He did not say they would recognize us by our titles, positions, or theological debates.
Instead, He said they would recognize us by our love.
Imagine two Christians.
The first knows many Bible verses but constantly criticizes others.
The second quietly serves people, forgives quickly, and shows compassion.
Which one reflects the heart of the Lord Jesus Christ more clearly?
Most people would choose the second person.
Consequently, our actions often speak louder than our words.
A Real-Life Example of Transforming Love
Several years ago, a man in a church felt deeply hurt by another member. Harsh words had been exchanged. Feelings were wounded. For months, bitterness grew.
Every Sunday, they sat in the same sanctuary while avoiding each other.
Eventually, one of them felt convicted during prayer. Instead of waiting for an apology, he approached the other person and offered forgiveness.
The conversation was uncomfortable at first.
However, healing soon followed.
Their friendship was restored, and their testimony became stronger than the conflict itself.
This story illustrates an important truth.
Love is not proven when relationships are easy. Instead, love is proven when relationships are difficult.
Why Forgiveness Is One of the Hardest Acts of Love
Furthermore, 1 Peter 4:8 teaches us to love each other deeply.
Deep love is different from shallow love.
Shallow love exists when everything is going well.
Deep love remains when people disappoint us.
That is why forgiveness is one of the strongest expressions of Christian love.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending the offense never happened.
Likewise, forgiveness does not excuse harmful behavior.
Instead, forgiveness releases bitterness and places justice into the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ.
When we forgive, we reflect the mercy that Jesus has shown us.
As a result, forgiveness becomes evidence of spiritual maturity.
The Problem Many Christians Face
Unfortunately, many believers struggle in this area.
Some carry old wounds for years.
Others replay painful memories repeatedly.
Still others avoid difficult conversations because they fear rejection.
Consequently, resentment grows.
The problem is that bitterness damages both relationships and spiritual growth.
Meanwhile, love opens the door to healing.
Therefore, every believer must learn how to love deeply and forgive freely.
Five Practical Ways to Love Others Like Jesus
1. Listen Before You Speak
First, give people your full attention.
Many people simply want to feel heard.
Therefore, listening becomes a powerful act of love.
2. Show Kindness Daily
Next, look for simple opportunities to help others.
A kind word, encouraging text, or thoughtful gesture can brighten someone’s day.
3. Forgive Quickly
Additionally, do not allow offenses to grow into bitterness.
Address issues early and extend grace whenever possible.
4. Pray for Others
Furthermore, praying for people changes your perspective.
It becomes difficult to hate someone when you are sincerely praying for them.
5. Put Others Before Yourself
Finally, look for ways to serve rather than be served.
This attitude reflects the example of the Lord Jesus Christ.
A Personal Heart Check
Now ask yourself these questions:
- Am I known for love?
- Do I forgive quickly?
- Do people feel encouraged after spending time with me?
- Do my actions reflect the character of the Lord Jesus Christ?
If any answer makes you uncomfortable, do not be discouraged.
Instead, view it as an opportunity to grow.
After all, every believer is still learning.

Final Thoughts: Our Most Important Work
Ultimately, the Lord Jesus Christ has given us many responsibilities. We are called to pray, study Scripture, serve others, and share the gospel.
However, love remains at the center of everything.
Without love, our accomplishments lose their value.
Without love, our knowledge becomes empty.
Without love, our witness becomes ineffective.
Therefore, let us ask the Lord Jesus Christ to fill our hearts with compassion, kindness, and forgiveness.
Then, let us love deeply, forgive freely, and serve faithfully.
Because when people see genuine love in action, they catch a glimpse of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
And that is truly our most important work.
