Wisdom for Life: How the Lord Jesus Christ Gives Wisdom for Everyday Decisions
Have You Ever Made a Decision You Later Regretted?
Have you ever wished you could go back and change a decision? Perhaps you spoke too quickly during an argument. Maybe you accepted a job without thinking it through. Or perhaps you ignored good advice and later faced the consequences.
Unfortunately, many people struggle because they have knowledge but lack wisdom. They know what is right, yet they fail to apply that knowledge when it matters most.
As a Christian writer and Bible teacher, I have seen this challenge repeatedly. Moreover, I have experienced it myself. Therefore, in this article, we will discover what true wisdom is, why it matters, how the Lord Jesus Christ gives it freely, and how we can develop wisdom for life through a deeper relationship with Him.
Most importantly, you will learn practical steps to grow in spiritual wisdom and make decisions that honor the Lord Jesus Christ.
What Is Wisdom?
Simply put, wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge correctly.
For example, a person may know that healthy eating is important. However, wisdom helps that person choose healthy foods consistently.
Likewise, someone may know what the Bible teaches about forgiveness. Yet wisdom helps them forgive when they have been hurt.
Therefore, wisdom is more than information. Instead, wisdom is knowing how to use information in everyday life.
This is why wisdom for life is so valuable. Knowledge fills the mind, but wisdom guides the heart and directs the feet.
James Reveals the Source of Wisdom
In James 1:5, we find one of the most encouraging promises in Scripture:
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of the Lord Jesus Christ, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
What a wonderful promise!
Notice that James does not say wisdom is available only to pastors, teachers, or scholars. Instead, he says anyone can ask.
Furthermore, he does not say the Lord Jesus Christ gives wisdom reluctantly. Rather, He gives generously.
As a result, nobody has to walk through life confused and directionless.
Wisdom Is Not About Age
Many people assume older people are automatically wiser. While experience can help, age alone does not guarantee wisdom.
For example, some people repeat the same mistakes for decades. Meanwhile, others gain wisdom quickly because they learn from the Lord Jesus Christ and apply His teachings.
Therefore, spiritual wisdom transcends age.
A young believer who studies Scripture and follows the guidance of the Holy Spirit may display more wisdom than someone much older.
Consequently, wisdom grows through obedience, not merely through years.
The Relationship Between Wisdom and Spiritual Maturity
As believers grow closer to the Lord Jesus Christ, they naturally grow in wisdom.
Why?
Because spiritual maturity develops when we learn to see life from His perspective.
For instance, mature believers:
- Think before speaking.
- Pray before acting.
- Forgive before bitterness grows.
- Trust before panic takes over.
- Serve before seeking recognition.
As these habits become part of daily life, wisdom flourishes.
Therefore, spiritual maturity and wisdom for life go hand in hand.
A Real-Life Example of Wisdom in Action
Imagine two coworkers who receive harsh criticism from their manager.
The first coworker reacts immediately. He becomes angry, argues, and damages his reputation.
The second coworker pauses. He listens carefully. Then he reflects on the criticism and responds respectfully.
Both individuals had the same knowledge. However, only one applied wisdom.
Likewise, Christians face similar situations every day.
We encounter criticism, disappointment, temptation, and uncertainty. Yet wisdom helps us respond in ways that honor the Lord Jesus Christ.
How the Lord Jesus Christ Develops Wisdom in Us
1. Through Prayer
First, wisdom grows when we ask for it.
Prayer acknowledges our dependence on the Lord Jesus Christ. Furthermore, prayer opens our hearts to His guidance.
Therefore, begin each day by asking Him for wisdom.
2. Through Scripture
Next, wisdom grows when we study the Bible.
The Scriptures reveal the character, principles, and promises of the Lord Jesus Christ.
As we read His Word consistently, our thinking changes.
Consequently, we become better equipped to make wise decisions.
3. Through Life Experiences
Additionally, wisdom develops through challenges.
Difficult situations often become classrooms where the Lord Jesus Christ teaches valuable lessons.
Although trials may feel uncomfortable, they frequently produce greater wisdom and stronger faith.
4. Through Obedience
Finally, wisdom increases when we obey what we already know.
Many people ask for wisdom while ignoring the instructions already found in Scripture.
However, genuine growth happens when knowledge becomes action.
Signs That Wisdom Is Growing in Your Life
How do you know if wisdom is increasing?
Consider these questions:
- Are you becoming more patient?
- Do you react less emotionally?
- Are your decisions becoming more thoughtful?
- Do you seek the Lord Jesus Christ before making major choices?
- Are your relationships becoming healthier?
If you answered yes to several of these questions, wisdom is likely growing in your life.
The Problem Many Christians Face
Many believers want the blessings of wisdom without developing the habits that produce it.
They want clarity without prayer.
They want direction without Scripture.
They want maturity without growth.
However, wisdom does not appear overnight.
Instead, wisdom grows gradually as we walk daily with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, consistency matters far more than perfection.
